Illustrator Peter Viska, the artist behind the much-loved All Right, Vegemite! books, is heading to Beaufort for Vegemite's 103rd birthday.

Join him at the Cyril Callister Museum on Sunday 25 October, 2pm to 4pm, for the launch of his exhibition. Hear his stories, see original artwork, meet him and have your books signed. Museum entry and light refreshments are included with your ticket.

Peter is also donating 20 signed, limited-edition prints, which will be sold to raise funds for the volunteer-run museum.

🇦🇺 ALL RIGHT, VEGEMITE! A VERY AUSTRALIAN CELEBRATION 🇦🇺

Vegemite is turning 103! To celebrate 103 years since Australian scientist Cyril Callister created Vegemite in 1923, the Cyril Callister Museum in Beaufort is hosting a very special celebration.

Joining the festivities as special guest is renowned Australian illustrator and animator Peter Viska, celebrating the launch of the All Right, Vegemite! exhibition and the much-loved books he created with folklorist Dr June Factor AM.

Come along to see original artwork, hear Peter’s stories from more than five decades in illustration and animation, meet Peter and have your books personally signed.

Today we remember the man who gave us Vegemite, Cyril Callister, who passed away on this day, 5 October (1949), aged 56. Cyril was born in Victoria and was one of nine children raised by his widowed father, William, a headmaster. Cyril was the first in the family to go to university, gaining a scholarship and his Master of Science degree in 1917. He worked for a food manufacturer as a chemist, but WWI interrupted, and he was sent to Scotland to work on manufacturing high explosives. There he met Katherine. They married in 1919 and had three children. In 1922, Marmite, which was invented by a German scientist, was popular in Australia but hard to get post war, so businessman Fred Walker gave the task to Cyril to create similar. Cyril experimented with Vitamin B rich brewer's yeast until he and Fred were happy, and a nationwide competition for a name came up with 'Vegemite'. At 56, Cyril died suddenly at his home in Kew. Cyril is buried in Box Hill Cemetery, Melbourne. Check out the vegemite jar on his grave!
