Annual General Meeting Successful

Iain Stewart shared some of his stories and history he has researched of the Geltwood Shipwreck off the coast of Southend. We had a good group of people for the AGM. The executive committee remains the same, with some minor changes, still pending, to the committee. We had a lovely afternoon tea afterwards where we could talk with our visitors that came along.

Carrie was stopped by the Station Master today, who simply had to ask where she found such a stunning Italian jacket on this chilly day.

Without missing a beat, Carrie smiled and replied…
“From the Beachport Museum & shop of course!” 😄

Our museum is full of wonderful pre-loved treasures waiting for a new home—and every purchase helps support the museum.

🧥 Have a jacket or jumper that’s no longer being worn? We’d love to give it a second life. Donations of clean, good-quality clothing are always gratefully received.

We are looking forward to the school holidays and a visit to our Old Wool & Grain Store Museum should be on your to do list.
Have your ancestors resided in Beachport? Were they light house keepers, gangers on the railway, or perhaps the Harbour Master.
Find the Bravery Medal awarded to one of the light keepers for rescuing a man from an overturned boat. Be amazed by the wonderful collection of shells donated by the Grosser family and the Downs family. Check out John Vincent Corigliano (Jack) who joined the Royal Navy as a stoker and went on to become a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australia Navy.
Beachport has a colourful history from its inception in 1878 when it became the major port for the Adelaide Melbourne shipping
trade. Today Rivoli Bay is home port to a fleet of crayfishing boats,
both in Beachport and Southend.
The jetty is the second longest in South Australia and can be a challenge in rough weather but lures you to the end where you can view Penguin Island and look back at the foreshore of the town.
Come in and say hello, visit the museum and browse our shop.

The Old Wool and Grain Store Museum are now honoured and privileged to have custodianship of the Royal Humane Society Medal of Honour awarded to Joseph Hilton in 1879, he was the second keeper of the Penguin Island lighthouse at the time.
We are very thankful to the Kingston SE Branch (where the medal was housed from the 18th September 1998) who visited our museum on the 31st May for an afternoon tea. The secretary of the Kingston SE Branch of NTSA, Alison Stillwell handed over the medal to Dean Bedson chair of the Beachport and District Branch of NTSA and provided the history and story of the event that led to Joseph Hilton receiving the medal.
The medal and the information will be placed near the Penguin Island display.
Joseph was rowing to the island with another gentleman when their boat was overturned by several large waves. Both men were thrown out of the boat but the passenger was trapped underneath it. Joseph dived to rescue him and on the third attempt managed to free him. He then had to swim about 100 yards to the island.
As the jetty had not been built it meant Joseph had to struggle to lift him up onto the rocky shore and scramble up the cliff to the lighthouse. His act of courage in rough seas was recorded by the Head Keeper in the lighthouse diary resulting in the award of the Medal of Honour.

Many thanks to the green fingered folks who bring in surplus produce for us to sell in our Museum Shop.
The tomatoes have been so scrumptious that not too many of mine make it home.
Make sure to check in as you go past to see if there are some $2.00 bags still left.
Thankyou to those seniors and children who took advantage of the free entry to the museum. They were all very impressed with the size of the museum and the displays telling the colourful past of Beachport.
