Bauple Museum

Bauple Museum Bauple Museum The Mount Bauple Museum was opened on the 24th February 2001. This was 132 years after the first settler took up residence in the area.

With so much history, local residents united in its preservation and have dedicated this museum for use by present and future generations.

MAD BY NAME… AND MAD BY NATURE! 🏍️

Well, we couldn’t resist this one.

Tucked amongst the photographs and memorabilia in The Old Garage is another little piece of Ron Laycock’s rather colourful motoring history.

This newspaper clipping from The News in Darwin, dated 30 October 1978, features Ron — known to his friends as “Mad” — aboard a rather extraordinary home-built drag bike.

The caption tells us that Ron, then of Berrimah, had put a VW 1500 motor into a home-built frame and raced it at the Darwin drag strip.

And apparently Ron wasn’t entirely satisfied with a quarter-mile time of around 14 seconds.

He thought it could do better 😂

Somehow, knowing Ron, we’re not terribly surprised.

The second photograph gives us a wonderful closer look at the machine itself — and raises about another twenty questions we’d like to ask him!

We haven’t managed to pin Ron down for another chat lately, but rest assured, we will. There are far too many stories hiding in The Old Garage not to.

What was it like to ride? Who helped build it? How fast did it eventually go? And where on earth did the nickname “Mad” come from?

We think this one deserves a proper story from the man himself.

Stay tuned… another Ron Remembers may be coming.

In the meantime, if you’ve got a soft spot for old cars, bikes, engines and the characters who built and raced them, come and have a wander through The Old Garage at Bauple Museum.

There’s history on the walls… and quite a few stories still waiting to be told ❤️🏍️

WE’D LOVE A FEW MORE HELPING HANDS 🤎🤍

Saturday’s Harvest Swap was another wonderful reminder of just what a great little community we have here in Bauple 🌸🪴 — and how much can happen when people come together ✨

There are some really exciting things happening at Bauple Museum at the moment ✨ Our museum continues to grow, The Verandah Café is keeping us wonderfully busy 🫖🌸 - The Old Garage has added a whole new dimension for our visitors ⛽️ and there seems to be something new happening all the time!

And with that growth comes the need for a few more helping hands 🌱

We’d love to welcome some new volunteers to our team!

You don’t need any special knowledge or museum experience. You might enjoy welcoming visitors, lending a hand in the café, helping behind the scenes, sharing a cuppa and a chat, or simply being there as part of the team. There are all sorts of ways to contribute, and even a little of your time can make a real difference.

Most importantly, you’d be joining a great group of people who genuinely care about Bauple 🌳 its history and its community — and who are pretty proud of what is happening here 🙌🏻

If you’ve watched the museum growing, enjoyed the café, visited The Old Garage, come along to one of our events, or simply like seeing good things happening in our little town, perhaps you might like to become part of it too 🤍🤍

You don’t have to give us every week or every spare minute. If you have some time you’d like to share, we’d love to have a chat.

Pop into the museum and say hello, or send us a message through our page.

Because little country museums don’t keep their doors open by themselves. They stay open because their communities do 🤎

Another fab day at the Harvest Swap. Beautiful sunshine and community spirit! 🌸🫖🪴🪻
