A beautiful story

In the early hours of April 25, 1927, 5 returned soldiers were walking home from an ANZAC Eve dinner in Sydney. They saw an elderly woman laying flowers on the newly built, but still incomplete, Cenotaph in Martin Place.
The men noticed she was praying alone at the memorial. The veterans silently joined her to wait out the dawn in vigil.
Deeply moved by the experience, the men resolved to mark the occasion annually. The following year, on April 25, 1928, a formal 4:30 a.m. service was organized, which is considered the first official Sydney ANZAC Dawn Service.
The Witnesses: The men involved in the 1927 event were Jim Davidson, Ernie Rushbrooke, George Patterson, Len Stickler, and Bill Gamble.
While some stories from history are embellished, this specific account is documented by the Anzac Day Dawn Service Trust.

The story is famous because the woman was anonymous, representing the countless families grieving lost loved ones.
