A mosaic that tells the story of a town.

Public art is everywhere – and it shapes how we experience the places we call home.

We are creating our first Public Art Policy and we're inviting you to help shape it.

Tell us what matters to you, where public art could have the biggest impact, and how it can reflect the character of our communities.

Next week Areka, our arts learning coordinator is heading out across the region to deliver the Schools Threatened Species Artwork Project to around 300 primary school children. This year, we have partnered again with East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to co-deliver some of their Catchment Connections program in schools.

In East Gippsland Shire alone there are
• 83 species of threatened birds (71 recorded since 2000)
• 34 species of threatened mammals (27 recorded since 2000)
• 15 species of threatened fish (10 recorded since 2000)
• 12 species of threatened reptiles (11 recorded since 2000)
• 12 species of threatened amphibians (11 recorded since 2000)
• 7 species of threatened invertebrates (6 recorded since 2000)
• 10 species of threatened crustaceans (10 recorded since 2000)

On the link you can learn about the threatened species we focused on for 2026 (and some others we researched in other years), and how you can help protect their homes in East Gippsland.

The Schools Collaborative Artwork project was originally conceived by Dawn Stubbs and the CARE - Concerned Artists Resisting Extinction Collective in 2020. Thanks to Bairnsdale Men’s Shed for generously creating the cut-outs. This Project has been supported by the Gippsland Community Foundation

“The landscapes, flora, and fauna which have inspired these works, draw from moments of quiet being, on land and in water. Through texture, colour, pattern and shape, each piece is an invitation to slow down, observe, and listen. Living on the coast I concentrate on the shifting, fluid state of the shoreline that transitions into vegetation and forests.
Drawing from the organic forms of land, water, and sky, I explore the unseen rhythms and textures of the natural world. Those fleeting moments of pattern, colour and movement that exist beyond literal depiction. I translate these encounters through drawing, printing, painting, dyeing, fabric and stitch experimenting to find what feels right for me.
My aim is to evoke memories and to awaken the senses to the sound of the water lapping, trees rustling, birds signalling each other, and to the smell of damp decaying vegetation, salt, seaweed, crabs scuttling, and the seemingly silent movement of fish and other creatures as they go about their lives.”

Elisabeth Scott, Local birds under threat #3
Ink, pencil and watercolour on kitakata 23x23cm framed | $300

“This exhibition is inspired by the Mary Oliver poem Mysteries, Yes
It speaks of

‘How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity.’

It seeks to draw attention to the marvel of the natural world.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.

Mary Oliver documented her response with words and has inspired me to document my experiences with the making of marks.

I am interested in how we move within the landscape and the effect it has on us. I think we all have an internal beat and that is where mine is the strongest. The further in I am, the longer I stay, the louder it gets.

I create my images using a combination of drawing and printmaking techniques with the intention of trying to capture how I feel in this time so that I can revisit it.

I am not a natural exhibitor. I have hoarded my work, using the energy from one to begin the next. Like a smoker, lighting one cigarette from the last. The exhibition title is an acknowledgement of that.”

Today, we acknowledge National Sorry Day — a day to reflect on the strength, resilience and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
National Sorry Day reminds us of the pain and ongoing impacts caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, culture and Country. It is a time to listen, learn, reflect and stand together in truth and healing.

At GEGAC, we honour the survivors of the Stolen Generations and recognise the strength they continue to show in keeping culture, connection and community strong. We also acknowledge the grief carried by families and communities across generations.

Healing happens through truth-telling, cultural connection, community and continued commitment to walking together with respect and understanding.
Today, we encourage our community to take a moment to reflect, yarn, learn and honour those affected by the policies of the past and their ongoing impacts today.

This week some of our fabulous Gallery Volunteers gathered for morning tea at the Stables. Their support is invaluable - from helping at opening nights and installing exhibitions to fundraising, dedicating time and expertise to the Gallery Board of Management and keeping the Gallery open almost every Saturday of the year. Thank you to all of you, we couldn't do this without you!

National Volunteer Week is a chance to thank and celebrate the people who give their time, energy, and care to help build connected and resilient communities. Every contribution matters - make 2026 your year to volunteer!
