Danjibana Lalara and Annabell Amagula have travelled to Venice for the opening weekend of Tides of Return โ€” a powerful collaboration with the .erc

โ€œWe are so happy to be here in Venice for the exhibition. Seeing the shell dolls on the sand dune for the first time made us emotional, because we are away from home and we are proud of our culture and sharing itโ€ Danjibana Lalara and Annabell Amagula ๐Ÿš

Senior Artist Annabell Dingmalmurrangkama Amagula has been experimenting new ideas & ways of practices this week ~ incorporating banana plant stems ๐ŸŒฟ

Annabell was thinking about using banana fibre to make some earrings ๐ŸŒฟ

Annabell put some aside and took it home ~ stripped it into small strings ~ washed it & hung it up to dry ๐ŸŒฟ

From the small fibres and Mangkurrkwa (pandanus)
Annabell designed and created earrings ๐ŸŒฟ

String is called Merra in Anindilyakwa language ~ it is also the name for blood ๐ŸŒฟ

The word Merra is also the word for red in Bahasa Indonesian.
Annabell has said that the Macassan people bought banana plant, tamarind trees and bamboo to the Eylandt ๐ŸŒฟ

Follow master weaver Elsie Bara, sisters Sue and Maureen; and the Anindilyakwa artists as they gather natural fibres throughout the seasons and weave a traditional kayuya (dilly bag). Throughout the process, passing on the knowledge to daughters and granddaughters.

โ€œFor the Warnindilyakwa people itโ€™s very important. This string is not new, itโ€™s from the past. And the ladies at the art centres keep doing it for the future, passing knowledge and skills to our young ones, so they can keep on doing it when we arenโ€™t here anymore,โ€ said Noeleen Lalara, Lead Art and Cultural Officer, Anindilyakwa Arts.

Filmed at Ayungkwiyungkwa, around the big fig tree, and at Anindilyakwa Arts Umbakumba, the film reveals the power and significance of string in bringing Anindilyakwa women together on country, to create, share knowledge and make memories.

โ€œI like working on a film with my grandmothers. I donโ€™t know how to make the baskets, but itโ€™s interesting to see how they make the strings from trees, and now everyone can watch the film and kids can learn,โ€ said Maxine McKenzie, Media Producer, Anindilyakwa Media.

Iโ€™m happy with my little sister Aly with me doing the projects together. We getting this really good practice and designs. I know some design ways from when we went to Indonesia together and learned the different kind of ways to make patterns and Iโ€™m happy about this that we all are together ~ Eningabaโ€๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ๐ŸŒผ Annabell Dingmalmurrangkama Amangula ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ๐ŸŒผ
