uivermemorialdc2 It may not look like much but this is one of
two rings that form the front of the engine nacelles. Both
have recently been carefully rebuilt by some of our team
using original components and new parts fabricated to match
those that had fallen to bits as a result of corrosion. As we
gradually work on the aircraft we are constantly impressed by
the engineering and manufacturing skills of the designers
and workers at the Douglas Aircraft Company ninetv vears
ago. We aim to complete the DC-2 restoration to be as close
as possible to how it left it left the factory floor in Santa
Monica.

Our team are doing a brilliant job of rebuilding the wing centre section so we are also preparing for the restoration of the engine nacelles. These are heavily corroded through their lower halves and will need to be taken apart, with many of the components remade – a great deal of work! Care must be taken to plan for putting the nacelles back together. To make this as easy as possible, a jig to hold the engine mounts in alignment with the front surfaces of the nacelles has been made. The new jig will allow the team to put it all back together in exactly the right place. When looking at the details of how the DC-2 was built 90 years ago, we are constantly amazed by the design and engineering skills involved. If you would like to get involved in restoring Albury’s historic DC-2 get in touch, details are on our website.

It was a pleasure to have Captain Deborah Lawrie AM visit the hangar last week. Deborah was invited to Albury as the guest speaker at the Christmas dinner of the Albury and District Historical Society. After winning a landmark s*x discrimination case in 1980 she became the first woman to become a pilot with a major Australian airline (Ansett Airlines). Recognised as a trailblazer for women in aviation she was inducted into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame in 2020. We look forward to showing her our restoration progress on her next visit.

Volunteer John cutting through (seized) bolts that hold the carburettor to the intake manifold of the Wright Cyclone 1820 engine we are working towards getting running. A working carburettor has been donated (without manifold) so we are sacrificing this one to save us a lot of time and work.
