The heart of the Rathmines Catalina Association (RCA) is the restoration to WWII specifications of a PBY-5A Catalina (Our Girl) complete with side waist blisters, bow turret and tunnel gun hatch. Restoration volunteers, with diverse backgrounds and skills, work on either a Monday or Wednesday (or both) at a workshop / hangar located at 13 Craftsman Close, Beresfield.
RCA are looking for additional like-minded volunteers that would love to work on the restoration. If you are interested in becoming part of this project, share or learn some skills and have some fun while maintaining the awareness of the role played by the Catalinas and Seaplanes at RAAF Base Rathmines please contact RCA.

In November 2023 ‘Our Girl’ was gifted to the RAAF, History and Heritage (HH-AF) and a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was drafted to allow RCA to work in concert with HH-AF to restore the aircraft. Restoration will continue for at least another four years before the completed project will be set up as a static display at a refurbished Fighter World, Williamtown.
RCA is dedicated to maintaining awareness of the role played by the Catalinas and Sea planes of the Royal Australian Air Force, their crews and the ground support personnel at the RAAF Base Rathmines. Founded in 1939, RAAF Base Rathmines became the largest seaplane base in the southern hemisphere. The Catalinas played a crucial role in the defence of Australia and were involved in events that ended the threat of invasion in World War II. At its peak, the base was home to over 3,000 RAAF personnel and comprised 230 buildings and marine facilities and had forty aircraft in service.
We need to preserve this history for future generations - Lest We Forget
