Tomorrow marks 97 years since Charles Kingsford Smith & Charles Ulm climbed into the Southern Cross, and embarked on an "impossible" journey.

The crew overcame their lack of seatbelts and leaking windshield, to cross the Pacific in one of Australian aviation's greatest moments.

Long before the Duigan Brothers and their Duigan Aeroplane, Aboriginal Australians conceptualised the principles of flight; lift, drag & rotation. While it would take thousands of years for the world to catch up, the boomerang is a cultural icon and evidence of early aerospace engineering.

This National Reconciliation week, we recognise the profound knowledge First Nation people carried long before aviation had a name 🌅

Everyone knows Smithy. But who was beside him?

Meet Charles Ulm. Co-pilot, and a man who helped make aviation history without ever getting quite enough of it.

Nine days before their flight, the pair had no idea they were about to pull off the impossible. The first ever transpacific flight was just days away.

Next Saturday marks 97 years since the Southern Cross touched down in Brisbane. Stay tuned as we celebrate the legends who made it happen! 🛩️

The Board of the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame (AAHOF) extends our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of AAHOF inductee and Australian aviation legend Bob Tait, who passed away yesterday.

Robert “Bob” Stuart Charles Tait made an invaluable contribution to aviation in Australia, from founding a small regional air service in North Queensland to establishing one of Australia’s most respected aviation theory schools.

Bob often said “I got to spend a lifetime in the air from Cessnas to Pitts to ‘copters – and for that I am truly thankful. I feel like I should give something back”. Bob gave back in spades. Vale Bob Tait.
