Board of the Week #175

King Custom Surfboards
6'0" Swallowtail Thruster
Shaped by Paul King (R.I.P.)
Albany, W.A.

A few weeks back Cherry dropped in with her friend & checked out the museum. They loved it & afterwards Cherry said she had a couple of boards to donate, 1 of which, if I remember correctly, was her 1st fibreglass board shaped by the late Paul King. Paul shaped Margaret River Energy boards with Ken McKenzie before moving to Albany & shaping Natural Curve, S.O.S. & King surfboards.

There was a nice crusty coat of wax on this razor blade of a board which has stopped the deck from tanning, however it has developed a rather pronounced twist, maybe Cherry loved going left?!!

The board will know sit proudly in our Surfer's End beach shack, in front of the view of Middleton beach. We're sure it spent its fair share of time down there back in Cherry's younger days.

To see all the Albany made boards & surf history on display drop in to Albany Museum of Surfing, Western Australia. at 40 Spencer Street, we're open Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-5pm, surf permitting.

And thank you again Cherry.

*if you have an old surfboard being neglected & gathering dust in your shed, be like Cherry, & drop in to see us.

😊😊😊

My good friend Adam Currie couldn't believe it when he rocked up at the Denmark tip shop with his support worker Todd & this beauty was leaning up against the wall. The board got shotgun for the ride home & Adam was in the back with the customary "Home James."!!!

Trevor couldn't believe it either & another of Adam's kneeboards returned to his collection in trade. 😊😊

Pics were posted on the Vintage Surfboard Collectors Victoria page & a member tagged the fella who made it all those decades ago in the early 70's, Geoff Coker:

"Nice pick up Trevor and cheers to Mark Howlett for forwarding on the pics ( he is a first cuz to the Parkinson bros) . A very early one and shows Mick Parky’s love of volan deck patches - in those days we got blanks off Mulford plastics - they were dead flat with a bit of nose lift so plenty of foam removed to get what you where after, trouble was the deeper you went with the planner the softer the foam was - especially down near the tail (hence the 3 layers down back). As Mark mentioned , our first printed decal. All boards made in the Brothers Fathers ( pro fisherman) net shed - three young blokes self taught and loving life down at the skinny end of the Mornington Peninsula Vic. Great to see it’s still breathing ,surviving the Nullarbor at a ripe old age of 57.πŸ˜šπŸ˜–πŸ‘¨β€πŸ¦°πŸ½πŸŒ›πŸ’«πŸŒž"

It's such a great feeling to get feedback from these pioneering masters of surfboard design & development & then sharing the stoke with my visitors & followers, so thank you all.

Now, feast your eyes some more on this tasty treat!!!

To see the ever growing collection of awesome boards drop in to Albany Museum of Surfing, Western Australia. at 40 Spencer Street, we're open Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-5pm, surf permitting.

And if you've got an old board collecting dust in the shed, don't take it to the tip, bring it here & get something for it, we'll make room!!!

"You're going to need a bigger *museum."

What an insane week or 2 it's been for this surfboard collector!!!

A Greg Laurenson Rusty, a Murray Smith kneeboard, a West Coast s-deck, a Parkinson single fin from Victoria, Cherry's first fibreglass board: an Albany made Paul King plus another Rusty, a couple of modern thrusters to get fixed & go in the for sale rack, old mate Wayne Coleman dropped off the classic Caster skateboard, & then the notorious "goon bag surfer" came past today with the Roach boogie board & a Hoye P.E. single fin!!!!

Might have to start selling some vintage boards to make room!!!!

Straight from the tip shop to the boardroom!!! Funny how things happen sometimes, there were no waves at our local spot this morning so off to the tip shop for the early bird scout. A rather nice "worm" to add to the collection & a funky fin was found to complete the look.

This one will look good with the Mark Fitzpatrick shaped Hot Buttered W.A. Crip Stix (B.o.t.W. #165) we have on display from old mate Adam Currie's collection.

To see all the rad kneeboards & "gut sliders" on display drop in to Albany Museum of Surfing, Western Australia. at 40 Spencer Street, we're open Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-5pm, surf permitting that is.

Cherry came for a visit today & after checking out all the boards & showing pics of some of her own she offered to donate a couple to the cause, her first board shaped by Paul King (R.I.P.) & a Rusty with a cool blue cover up on the bottom, they'll get cleaned up & put on display somewhere.

Cherry has also put dibs on the Frank Williams shaped Hot Buttered single fin, just so y'all know
πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

In between Cherry leaving & returning, old mate Ernest Palm rocks up with the Greg Laurenson (R.I.P.) shaped Rusty...

Relaminating the fin area on the Albany made Eclipse from the Bremer Bay tip. Sliced the glass along the stringer and filled both sides with resin, then layed a section of glass over the top.

Will sand back when cured & then set the replacement fin in place.

Board of the Week #172

Blaxell Surfboards
6'10Β½" Roundtail Single Fin
#2111 Shaped by Greg "Thunderpants" Laurenson
Perth, W.A.

Another board under another brand by the legend Greg Laurenson, this one from the Tom Blaxell stable in the early 70's. Lots of length & volume in this beauty & the keel fin is a lesser seen variety of fin.

This one still needs some finishing touches & a good polish to really make it pop & everyone loves a yellow board. Always rewarding to replace foam & repair the damage on these 50 year old pieces of art.

To see this & all the other cool boards on display drop in to Albany Museum of Surfing, Western Australia. at 40 Spencer Street, we're open Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-5pm, surf (& soccer commitments) permitting.

What a great way to start the day. Arrived to open the museum as Lisa & her support workers Tanaya (on Lisa's right) & Terri pulled up. Support workers & their clients get free entry & Lisa was amazed at how different the premises looks now.

She used to work here when it was Activ Industries & specifically remembered that the Surfers End beach shack was where the coffee, tea & other stuff for the canteen was stored, sometimes they would hide in there from the staff πŸ˜€

You're welcome to drop in with your clients if you're also a support worker.

Also scored a couple of cool items for the museum & thrift shop.
