National Anzac Centre

National Anzac Centre The experience is known for commemorating the war through the stories of the ANZACs as opposed to telling its own story via pro-war or anti-war sentiments.

Located within Albany’s heritage listed Princess Royal Fortress, the National Anzac Centre overlooks the actual harbour from which over 41,000 men and women departed Australia for the Great War. Opened on the 1st of November 2014 by the Prime Ministers of Australia and New Zealand, The National Anzac Centre is an award-winning facility that uses multimedia, interactive technology and historical ar

tefacts to create a deeply personal connection with the past, as well as pay tribute to those who served. The interpretive content that forms part of the interactive experience was developed by the Western Australian Museum and the Australian War Memorial and is delivered via a series of interactive visual and audible displays. The centre combines traditional museum display and exhibition techniques with highly interactive, multi-media content. To navigate and interpret this content visitors assume the identity of one of 32 actual service men or women, and follow their experience of the Great War: from recruitment, through training and embarkation, ship-board life on the convoys, the conflicts at Gallipoli, the middle east and the Western Front and for those lucky enough to survive, their return home and the difficulties they faced adjusting back into normal society. In 2016 the National Anzac Centre was named Number 1 Museum in Australia by TripAdvisor. The National Anzac Centre is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) between 9am and 5pm with last entry at 4pm. It is recommended to allow at least 2 hours for the experience.

This Month in Albany Military History - Princess Royal Fortress Construction Begins.

In May 1891, Albany marked a significant milestone in its military history. Mr. John Blackbourn, an experienced defence engineer from the office of the military commandant in Victoria, arrived to oversee the construction of the Princess Royal Fortress. His leadership was crucial in establishing one of Western Australia’s key coastal defences.

"The beauty of his engineering plans lie in the artistic draftsmanship and water colour use which are clearly visible in his Victorian fortifications drawings". - Engineers Australia

Albany's link to HMAS Anzac - York Street sign

This colour photo was taken in 1996, and shows Albany Mayor Annette Knight and ship’s crew at the unveiling of the York Street sign on board HMAS ANZAC.

HMAS ANZAC III (FFH 150) was launched on 16 September 1994 by Lieutenant Colonel V. Statham, better known as Vivian Bullwinkle, and commissioned on 18 May 1996. The first of 10 ANZAC Class frigates, she was built by Tenix Defence Systems at Williamstown in Victoria. HMAS ANZAC’s motto is “United We Stand” and she was the ‘First Lady of the Fleet”, being the oldest ship in the fleet between 15 June 2023 and her decommissioning on 18 May 2024.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

First female Gunner to fire at Albany Heritage Park

A powerful moment in Albany’s history will unfold this month at Albany Heritage Park, as long-time volunteer Trish Forsyth becomes the first female gunner to undertake an official gun salute.

On Tuesday 21 April, Trish will take her place beside the historic artillery she has spent years watching from the sidelines; this time not as an observer, but as the one who brings it to life.

Her first firing forms part of the Albany Heritage Park’s 2026 commemorative ‘living heritage’ program, honouring Albany’s deep connection to the ANZAC story and the significance of the Princess Royal Fortress to Australia’s military history.

Gun salutes will take place at Albany Heritage Park at 10:30am and 1:30pm on Tuesday 21 April, and again on Thursday 23 April.
