WYMAN / In her โAggregate iconโ series, Jemima Wyman takes small fragments of photographs from her extensive archive of found protest documentation (thousands of digital photographs, sourced online, that document protests from around the world) and creates intricately patterned kaleidoscopic and mandala-like circular collages. Cut by hand, each fragment is carefully arranged into fractals โ never-ending, repeat patterns โ that are, in turn, rotated and repeated across the composition.
Through this laborious physical process, Wyman enacts political theorist Hannah Arendtโs concept of โgoing visitingโ. Arendt proposes that moral judgement requires us to step outside of our individual understanding of the world in order to โvisitโ the perspectives of others. By doing this, we come to a new, more informed, more expansive understanding. As curator Katherine Dionysius explains:
