TOM / Earlier this year, Samstag had the pleasure of running a creative workshop for students planning to participate in this yearโ€™s Tournament of Minds. We had a great time making masks, placards and chants for students to stage their own Jemima Wyman-inspired mini protests ๐ŸŽญ๐Ÿชง๐ŸŽถ

We were so impressed by what these students achieved in 2 hours and canโ€™t wait to see the presentations of their Long Term Challenges this weekend!

The TOM SA State Finals are being held at Adelaide University, Adelaide City Campus West, on Sunday 30 August. To celebrate, Samstag will be open from 11 am to 4.30 pm on Sunday.ย  Pop in to see the shows and make your own colourful collage to take home with you. See you on Sunday!

Drop in during the day, turn up for the final moments, or stay the whole seven hours. Just make sure not to miss this powerful end to forty days of silent endurance.

WYMAN / In โ€˜Deepsurface fray rageโ€™ (2018), Jemima Wyman draws on the concept of the quarter-shelterโ€”a military textile design that functions as a convertible tent, cape, or blanketโ€”to explore the relationship between textiles, protest and collective resistance.

The quarter-shelter was one of the first military garments to feature camouflage-inspired designsโ€”both garment and pattern used to support the physical movement and protection of military personnel. Similar strategies have been employed by protesters for protection against surveillance and various forms of crowd control.

Wymanโ€™s large-scale textile installation explores the relationship between tools of warfare and tools of resistance. However, rather than camouflage patterns, her textiles are embellished with painted and spray-painted symbols of civil unrest: handprints, bullet holes, and protest slogans. In her essay for the

WYMAN / In her โ€˜Aggregate iconโ€™ series, Jemima Wyman takes small fragments of photographs from her extensive archive of found protest documentation (thousands of digital photographs, sourced online, that document protests from around the world) and creates intricately patterned kaleidoscopic and mandala-like circular collages. Cut by hand, each fragment is carefully arranged into fractals โ€” never-ending, repeat patterns โ€” that are, in turn, rotated and repeated across the composition.

Through this laborious physical process, Wyman enacts political theorist Hannah Arendtโ€™s concept of โ€˜going visitingโ€™. Arendt proposes that moral judgement requires us to step outside of our individual understanding of the world in order to โ€˜visitโ€™ the perspectives of others. By doing this, we come to a new, more informed, more expansive understanding. As curator Katherine Dionysius explains:

๐ŸŒน7 is a number symbolically tied to forgiveness in Christian tradition.
๐ŸŒนThe beads are crafted from rose petals, representing the traditional rosaryโ€”a Catholic instrument of prayer and penance.
๐ŸŒนThese rose petals were donated from the gardens of Adelaidean women who all share an intimate knowledge of the silent treatmentโ€”including women representing three generations of the artistโ€™s own family.

Gardens, like families, require care and responsiveness, and the collaborative origins of this material foreground the small acts of reciprocity essential to release from weaponised silence.

WYMAN / One of the earliest works in ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ is โ€˜Faceย body projectโ€™ (1997), which formed part of Wymanโ€™s final undergraduate portfolio. Part of a larger series, this work is a photocopy of a black and white photograph of the artistโ€™s own face. Encircling Wymanโ€™s face is a series of curved black ink lines. With this early work, we already see two key facets of Wymanโ€™s practice emerge โ€” pattern and the interplay between interiority and exteriority.
