WIRLTUTI / Last week we celebrated the opening of our final exhibitions for 2026: 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩 by Robert Fielding (Yankunytjatjara, Western Arrernte, Afghan and Pakistani) and the Mimili Maku Wati Studio, منّت 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝘁 by Naina Sen, Naveed Farro and Harrison Hall, and 𝟮𝟮 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 by Keith Piper. Each work speaks to the power of cultural storytelling through art and it was wonderful to celebrate the artists and their work alongside so many colleagues, friends, family and community.

Our sincere thanks go to Uncle Mickey Kumatpi O’Brien for welcoming us all to Kaurna Country and to Adelaide University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Nicola Phillips, for officially launching our 2026 Wirltuti season. Last, and by no means least, it was an absolute pleasure to have Robert, Mark, Graham and Angus from Mimili, and Naina and Naveed all join us on the night — a big thank you for all travelling so far to be with us at Samstag.

Congratulations to all the artists. It is a privilege to share your work and stories with our visitors. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Samstag over the coming weeks.

The AFF 2026 Expand Moving Image Commission launches tonight at Samstag Museum of Art

Through an immersive installation, Naina Sen (NT), Naveed Farro (Vic) and Harrison Hall (Vic) reimagine the cultural connections between West and South Asia.

The exhibition runs from 9 October - 4 December 2026, kicking off with the opening event tonight, and a free artist talk tomorrow, Friday 9 October at 12pm.

BTS / Last week we received a very special delivery 🚚 Making the 1,000-kilometre trip from Kamberri/Canberra, ‘Wiiny–Wiinypa’ arrived at Samstag ready to take centre stage in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁. A collaboration between Yankunytjatjara artist Robert Fielding and members of the Mimili Wati Group, this work represents culture, Country, community and collaboration.

As Fielding explains:
“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘺 𝘑𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘺 𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯. ANNOUNCEMENT / 📣 Meet the Class of 2027📣
 
Samstag is pleased to announce Jennifer Mathews (SA) as a recipient of the prestigious Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship for 2027.

Mathews will receive a scholarship that provides institutional fees for one academic year, a $75,000 tax-free allowance, and travel expenses to a leading international art program of their choice.

Jennifer Mathews’ strong technical skills in metal fabrication blends seamlessly with her interest in architectural and industrial forms. Working across sculpture and installation,  her practice interrogates the ways in which built environments shape our perception, movement and behaviour.

“Mathews…aims to give us an understanding of the institutional structures that quietly shape our lives, and also explores how their designs and technologies can be détourned into objects of calm, quietude and play.”

ANNOUNCEMENT / 📣Meet the Class of 2027📣
 
Samstag is pleased to announce Kirtika Kain (NSW) as a recipient of the prestigious Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship for 2027.

Kain will receive a scholarship that provides institutional fees for one academic year, a $75,000 tax-free allowance, and travel expenses to a leading international art program of their choice.

Kirtika Kain draws on the materiality connected to her Dalit family history to explore themes of caste, identity and ancestral memory. Blending elements of painting, printmaking and installation, her poetic material investigations result in opulent textural surfaces that act as archaeological vestiges.

“Her materials are associated with ritual, meaning, manual labour and the body within the Indian caste system. These are, she observes, ‘materials that I have obsessed over, tested for many years, and that affect the body when we stand before them’.”

ANNOUNCEMENT / 📣 Meet the Class of 2027📣
 
Samstag is pleased to announce Sam Cranstoun (QLD) as a recipient of the prestigious Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship for 2027.

Cranstoun will receive a scholarship that provides institutional fees for one academic year, a $75,000 tax-free allowance, and travel expenses to a leading international art program of their choice.

Sam Cranstoun works across painting, sculpture, video and installation, investigating how the legacy of modernist visual language continues to evolve across contemporary contexts.

“Cranstoun takes the combinatory approach underlying these discourses to absurdity through applying them in a straightforward and unembarrassed way to Modernism. The unhinged and strangely beguiling results thus take the combinatory logics of provincialism, academicism and our AI-suffused lives to extremes, and the resultant absurdity functions as a critique of these discourses.”
