Ellie Buttrose is the curator of the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, a survey exhibition featuring 24 artists across three venues: the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and Samstag Museum of Art. Joining Samstag’s Associate Curator Anna Zagala in the studio midway through the exhibition’s installation, Ellie shares how this survey of Australian contemporary art has unfolded and continues to surprise her, what these artworks and art practices reveal, and why exhibition making is an experimental practice.

The free city tram runs right along North Terrace, with stops near each venue (make sure to catch the Botanic line).

What an incredible start to the 2026 Adelaide Biennial! Samstag was thrilled to get the Vernissage Weekend started with a full day of public programs.

Art criticism. Panel discussions. Artist talks. Performance. There was much to be seen and heard at Samstag last Friday and the overwhelming response from our community (both local and beyond) made the day even more special! A very big thank you to everyone who attended our events. Seeing so many people show their support — not only for the Biennial and its artists and curator, but arts practice and discourse in general — was inspiring.

A special thank you to Robert Taylor and Harley Hall for their deeply thoughtful Welcome to Country. Join us for Brian Fuata’s performance work, followed by drinks in the gallery, to welcome the 2026 Adelaide Biennial at Samstag.

Established in Australia’s experimental performance scene (1999-2006) with his autofiction monologues and 20-minute improvisations, 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗮 works across visual and live arts via performance, film, installation, email and sms text, social media and print. His practice in structured improvisation is the ‘mediation of performance’ drawn from reading select physical, social and relational features of a given site and context to manifest his live and digital events.

𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀
Hear from Susie Anderson (Blue), Sam Beard (Dispatch), Paris Lettau (Memo) and Robert Leonard (Town Hall) as they reflect on the vital role of criticism in developing artistic practices that are presented in biennials. Panelists will speak to how art journals foster discourse that shapes exhibition practice and reflect on how reviews influence exhibition histories.

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 is Wergaia/Wemba Wemba writer of prose and poetry from regional Victoria. As Managing Editor of Blue Art Journal, she is excited to support the next generation of First Nations arts writing.

𝗦𝗮𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 is the head editor and co-founder of 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸. His writing has appeared in 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬, 𝘶𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦, 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 and 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦.

𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗷𝗶 was born in 1960 at Wirrwawuy, near Yirrkala and Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula, at the very northeastern tip of the Northern Territory. She is the daughter of Gumatj woman Rrirraliny Yunupiŋu (a daughter of famous artist and political figure Mungurrawuy Yunupiŋu), and Gunguyuma Dhamarrandji, who was brought up by the legendary Djapu leader Woŋgu Munuŋgurr. Her märi, or mother's mother's clan, is Rirratjiŋu, the landowners of Yirrkala, who share many sacred designs with the Djambarrpuyŋu of this area.
Her recent works explore the theme of the songlines associated with ceremonies connected to Dhambadiŋ (Death or Deaf Adder) on Bremer Island.

𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝗩𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗻'𝘀 work engages with the concept of novel ecosystems—drawn from the fields of environmental conservation and restoration—as a framework for examining the systems of value that shape our experiences and interactions with the material world.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a Bundjalung and Kullilli writer, journalist and radio broadcaster. In 2025, he was appointed as the inaugural Professor of Indigenous Cultural and Creative Industries within the School of Art, Communication and English (SACE) at the University of Sydney.

𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 is a Boorloo-born, Naarm-based writer of Aboriginal and European descent. He is a lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts, a PhD candidate at RMIT, and a senior editor at Memo.
