LISTEN / ON ART Episode 40 | Ellie Buttrose

Weโ€™ve got your weekend listening sortedโ€ฆ

Ellie Buttrose is the curator of the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, a survey exhibition featuring 24 artists across three venues: the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and Samstag Museum of Art. Joining Samstagโ€™s Associate Curator Anna Zagala in the studio midway through the exhibitionโ€™s installation, Ellie shares how this survey of Australian contemporary art has unfolded and continues to surprise her, what these artworks and art practices reveal, and why exhibition making is an experimental practice.

YIELD STRENGTH / Vernissage Weekend

What an incredible start to the 2026 Adelaide Biennial! Samstag was thrilled to get the Vernissage Weekend started with a full day of public programs.

Art criticism. Panel discussions. Artist talks. Performance. There was much to be seen and heard at Samstag last Friday and the overwhelming response from our community (both local and beyond) made the day even more special! A very big thank you to everyone who attended our events. Seeing so many people show their support โ€” not only for the Biennial and its artists and curator, but arts practice and discourse in general โ€” was inspiring.

A special thank you to Robert Taylor and Harley Hall for their deeply thoughtful Welcome to Country. We would also like to thank all of the speakers for sharing their thoughts, experience and insights โ€” Daniel Browning, Tristan Harwood, Nick Croggon, Milminyina Dhamarrandji, Matthew Teapot Djipurrtjun, Isadora Vaughan, Ellie Buttrose, Susie Anderson, Sam Beard, Paris Lettau and Robert Leonard โ€” and Brian Fuata and Daniel Jenatsch for an unforgettable performance!

And, as always, we greatly appreciate the exceptional services of the team and

Samstag is delighted to partner with the Art Gallery of South Australia and Adelaide Botanic Garden to present the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: ๐˜ ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ. We look forward to sharing the incredible work of this yearโ€™s Biennial artists with our audience over the coming months.

The 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art runs until 8 June 2026.

Samstag is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm for the duration of the 2026 Adelaide Festival.
