Chalcidian Bronze Helmet with Remains of Original Tinning
5th-4th century B.C.

Greek bronze helmet of the Chalcidian type with matching cheek guards and beautifully preserved remains of tinning. The high-rising calotte is divided into two halves by a pointed central ridge and separated from the lower helmet wall by an inward-curving step. The ear cut-outs have outward-curving, raised rims, while the eyebrows are likewise raised and embossed outward. Between the eye openings is a lanceolate nose guard. At the back is a short, horizontally projecting neck guard. The cheek guards, rounded at the back and angular at the front, are attached to the helmet bowl by hinges. At the end of each cheek guard is a perforation through which it could be tied beneath the chin. A very well-preserved Chalcidian-type helmet, used throughout the Greek world from around 500 B.C. until the time of Alexander the Great. Mounted.

Dimensions: 34.3 cm high (including cheek guards)

Provenance: According to the enclosed copy of the invoice, it was acquired by Arthur M. on 18 May 1973 from H. M. Luther Antiques in London. Thereafter in the American and, most recently, the Belgian art trade.

Greek Lifesize Relief Head of a Young Man
4th-3rd century B.C.

Lifesize head in 2/3 view of a young man, possibly originating from a high relief of a funerary monument. The expressive face with realistic, individual features. The eyes looking gently out from thick lids, the mouth with its distinct lips is closed, the chin prominent. The still round cheeks indicate the man’s young age. His hair is thick and wavy and falling in strands into his forehead at the front. The right ear is worked out. Mounted.

Provenance: New York private collection W. F., acquired in the 1970s.

A pair of Eastern Greek Gold Earrings in the Shape of Pomegranates
5th century B.C.

Very finely crafted gold earrings from the eastern Mediterranean, each with a soldered pendant in the shape of a pomegranate. The hollow-formed fruit is decorated with fine granules forming bands and floral elements. The sepals are depicted at the bottom. The upper part of the earring has a small opening for wearing. See for the type the earrings from the famous Maikop Treasure in southern Russia, now exhibited at the Penn Museum with the object number 30-33-7B. Ready to wear though it is recommended to have modern pins custom-made to avoid opening the ancient clasp.

Dimensions: 4.3 cm high, weighs 2.4 grams and 2.2 grams resp.

Provenance: From the K. A. Collection in Paris, acquired in the 1990s. Sold in 2025 at a German auction house.

Important Miniature Silver Statuette of the Etruscan Wine God Fufluns
5th century B.C.

Small but exceptionally finely crafted silver statuette of Fufluns, the Etruscan god of wine and fertility, who is identified with the Greek Dionysos. Fufluns has a full beard with a curved moustache and a separately worked wreath, which was soldered in place. It gathers the thick hair at the crown, letting it fall down the back in fine strands over the shoulder. In his right hand, extended to the side, he holds a rhyton – likewise separately worked and soldered in place – decorated with longitudinal grooves, made in cold-worked technique. His left arm is bent and extended forward, with the fingers outstretched. The god wears a close-fitting garment decorated with trim, falling in rich folds down to the ankles. His bare feet peek out from beneath the robe. On the right foot is a mounting pin by which the statuette was mounted in antiquity and which is today inserted into a cylindrical wooden base. An identical bronze statuette is published in: Sybille Haynes, “A Miniature Bronze Statuette,” in: Studi Etruschi 69, Florence 2003, pp. 71-75.

Provenance: Collection U. S., Cologne, acquired in the 1960s. Thereafter with the art dealer Elmar Pfennings, Cologne, around 1980. With Forum Romanum Antik, Cologne, before July 1994. Acquired there by the last owner on 11 July 1994. With the original invoice and expertise from Forum Romanum Antik.

Published Egyptian Headrest
New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, 1550-1292 B.C.

Headrest composed of three separately crafted wooden pieces. The semicircular upper section (headpiece) has a hole in the centre and is mounted onto a tenon with a small wedge. This wedge is inserted through the neck of the stand and secures the headpiece just above the ear, beneath the skull. The support beneath provides the necessary height. This not only ensured a relatively comfortable sleeping position but also allowed air to circulate around the head, an additional advantage in Egypt's warm climate. To provide even greater comfort, pieces like this were padded with a linen pillow in ancient times. The headrest is published in: Jean-Louis Domercq, Dietrich Wildung “Ancient Egyptian Wood Sculptures”, Catalogue of Galerie Sycomore Ancient Art, Geneva 2015, pp. 22-23, no. 5. Mounted on a Plexiglas base.

Provenance: Swiss private collection of Daphné Koutolakis, Geneva, acquired in 1978. Thereafter with Galerie Khnoum in Geneva. Acquired there on 26 June 2015 by Jean-Louis Domercq, Galerie Sycomore, for his private collection. With a copy of the transfer document and two Art Loss Register extracts from 2015 and 2019.

Gilded Eastern Greek Silver Bracelet with Lion Heads
5th-4th century B.C.

Impressive hollow-worked bracelet of gilded silver with lion-head protomes at the opposing ends. The animals’ heads have gaping mouths and protruding fangs. The tongues, likewise made of gilded silver, were soldered in place. The animals’ close-set ears are crafted as settings that once held gemstones. Each end is finished with a beaded cord. Ready to wear. Mounted.

Provenance: From the Cologne collection of U. Schloßhardt (1922-2006), acquired in the 1960s. Thereafter in the collection of Peter Schreiner (1947-2010). In the possession of Forum Romanum Antik in Cologne since at least 1994. There acquired from the art dealer Elmar Pfennings. With original invoice and certificate dated 27 October 1994. With a metal analysis.

Paestan Bell Krater from the Workshop of Asteas
350-330 B.C.

Beautifully preserved red-figure bell krater with white details, from the Paestan workshop of Asteas, depicting the young Dionysus on the front, striding to the right and facing left. He holds the thyrsos and a wreath in his right hand and has a cloak with the dotted hem characteristic of Asteas draped over his arm. In his outstretched right hand he holds a taenia (a ritual headband) with ribbons. His right thigh and ankles are likewise adorned with bands. Dionysos wears his hair tied up in a knot, a wreath, and a white-dotted sash running diagonally across his chest. A Paestan rosette hangs above the scene on the left. Two upright palmettes frame the scene on either side. On the other side is a seated woman with her upper body bare. She has a himation wrapped around her hips and legs, again displaying the dotted ornamental border. White beaded bands adorn her hair and neck, while white bracelets decorate her wrists. A rosette and taenia fill the space in the upper corners, and an altar stands behind the woman. This scene too is framed by upright palmettes. A continuous band of laurel leaves runs beneath the rim of the krater, while a black wave pattern appears below the figural zone. Two upturned handles are attached to the body, with fan-shaped palmettes painted beneath them. The vessel stands on a tall, profiled foot. Large Bronze Statuette of a Goddess from Luristan
8th-7th century B.C.

Important and exceptionally rare solid bronze statue of a goddess from Luristan in northwestern Iran. She wears a long garment held by a finely detailed belt that reaches down to the ankles. The lower hem of the robe flares slightly outward. A pendant arrangement with five pendants hangs across her abdomen. The goddess is strikingly adorned. A necklace with large beads hangs around her neck. Her arms, placed beneath her breasts, each wear a set of bracelets. A tall, radiant diadem is set in her hair, which falls smoothly backwards. Particularly striking is the crescent moon framing her round, stylised breasts. The face, with its large circular eyes, corresponds to the iconography of Luristan. The nose is prominent, while the mouth is shaped into a friendly smile. The unusually large, fully three-dimensional statue was already highly valued in antiquity. This is evidenced by an ancient repair to the hem at the back. For comparison with the few known fully three-dimensional bronze statues from Luristan, see the warrior with a sword tucked into his belt and wearing a mantle, found in the region of Pusht-i-Kuh and published in: Pierre Amiet „Art of the Ancient Near East, New York 1980, p. 456, no. 644. Mounted on a heavy metal stand.
