Nur keine Panik!

"Galerie Elisabeth and Klaus Thoman present two works by Johannes Wohnseifer from his series “In the German West.” The reference to “Bauhaus” is intentionally ironic: rather than the historic avant-garde school, it points to a hardware store in Cologne, which the artist repeatedly photographs from a moving car."

Art must strike a balance between materiality and idea. The effort involved in negotiating this compromise becomes visible in the success of the work. Abstraction and figuration embody extremes: abstract painting relies entirely on the dynamics of materials, while figuration subjects them to the conventions of representation. In marketing, beauty has become routine. Since then, success has often taken a detour through what ‘good taste’ rejects.

Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen is an art theorist and curator. As director of the Kunstverein in Hamburg, he early on presented the key artists of the 1990s. As rector, he brought the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna to international prominence. He teaches art history and design theory at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.

With Arnulf Rainer, the art world loses one of the most significant and distinctive artists of his time.

Since the 1980s, we had the privilege of accompanying Arnulf Rainer in numerous exhibitions, marked by a close collaboration and mutual respect. The projects and publications we shared remain, for us, an expression of an extraordinary and deeply valued artistic dialogue.
We pay tribute to a great artist and to his unmistakable artistic vision.
Our thoughts are with his family and all those who were close to him.
