STUDIO VISIT with Jan Rybníček

Born in 1988 in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic, Jan Rybníček lives and works in Munich, where he has his studio at Atelierhaus Domagk. He studied Fine Arts in Brno and Lisbon before graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Markus Oehlen in 2019.

His paintings rarely begin with a fixed idea or a sketch. In the studio, Jan starts by laying down fields of colour — often yellow, blue or green — then rotates the canvas, observes it and waits for something to emerge. A figure, a face, an animal, an object or simply a movement can become the starting point for what follows.

From there, the painting gradually takes shape. Forms are defined, crossed out, transformed and sometimes broken apart entirely until a new story appears. Memories of dreams, songs, images and everyday situations can find their way into the work, but chance and the act of painting itself remain central to the process.

The resulting creatures exist somewhere between human, animal and abstraction. Bodies merge with one another and their surroundings, creating scenes in which intimacy can become constraint, and connection can just as easily suggest a loss of autonomy. Nothing is quite what it seems at first glance.

We visited Jan in his Munich studio ahead of PARALLEL VIENNA | contemporary art fair , where we’ll be presenting a selection of his work from recent years.

 Nothing to Do, Nowhere to Go Kater D.

📅 Opening: Sa, 26.09.2026 | 18:00 with opening remarks by MISS_STONEINGER 🪨

In her new solo exhibition “Nothing to Do, Nowhere to Go,” Kater D. presents new works from her ongoing series Über das Zuhause (On Home). Drawing from a personal archive of photographs, fabrics and everyday fragments, she creates tactile compositions moving between memory and abstraction.

The show looks at home as a space of comfort and retreat: a cat dozing, crumpled bed sheets, the organic patterns of mold are translated into her own visual language. At its core: the contradiction between stillness and change. What happens while we do nothing? Kater D. explores how even at rest, things keep shifting and evolving.

We are pleased to present a solo presentation by Jan Rybníček at PARALLEL VIENNA | contemporary art fair 2026.

Jan Rybnicek’s paintings are inhabited by enigmatic, anthropomorphic beings whose bodies resist clear definition. Fragmented, multiplied or partially concealed, they merge with one another and with the surrounding pictorial space. Working intuitively and associatively, Rybnicek creates conglomerates in which bodies enter into shifting relationships and possible narratives remain unresolved.

His work explores interpersonal relationships and inner states through a particular sensitivity to ambiguity. An interest in mysticism and the irrational meets a distinct sense of irony, allowing different meanings and psychological states to coexist within the same image.

Summer Afterwork 🍸🌅 Thursday, 23 July 2026 | from 18:00

During the summer, we’re taking things a bit slower, while already preparing for the autumn behind the scenes.

Until the end of August, we’re showing a curated selection of works from our programme, bringing together pieces by Johanna Wakolbinger, , K A T E R D., Rudolf Fitz and in new constellations.

You can visit us every Friday and Saturday from 13-18:00, or send us a message to arrange an individual appointment. 💌

And of course, summer calls for a get-together! Join us on 23 July from 18:00 for our Summer Afterwork.

We’ll have drinks and snacks, as always, and the artists will be there too. It’s a great opportunity to (re)discover the works on view and enjoy a relaxed summer evening with us.

Final days to see Rudolf Fitz’s solo exhibition „Un pezzo d’Italia“ at Davy Art Space.

The exhibition remains on view until Saturday, 27 June.
