Artsy Viewing Room - Tony Matelli. Old Enemy, New Victim, 2007 - https://www.artsy.net/viewing-room/gary-tatintsian-gallery-tony-matelli-old-enemy-new-victim-2007

Old Enemy, New Victim presents a carefully composed scene: a monkey under attack by two predatory animals. Executed in silicone, resin, and wool, the sculpture reflects Matelli’s technical training and sustained interest in material verisimilitude.

The restrained theatricality of the composition recalls the structure of classical fables, including those of Jean de La Fontaine, in which animal figures serve as vehicles for moral and social reflection. Subtle gestures and expressions encourage viewers to recognize familiar human traits, creating a measured tension between observation and empathy.

“I always make the canvas deeper than ordinarily. When you stand directly in front of the painting, it gives it just enough depth to hold it off the wall; you're conscious of this sort of shadow, just enough depth to emphasize the surface.” – Frank Stella

The Duel works (2001) form part of Stella’s Heinrich von Kleist series (1996–2008), inspired by the writings of Heinrich von Kleist. Rather than illustrating narrative episodes, Stella translates their psychological intensity into formal terms.

These works are defined by layered geometries, sweeping arcs, intersecting grids, and abrupt angular structures that appear to collide and reconfigure across the surface. The Duel series can be understood as a late synthesis in Stella’s practice. The clarity of his earlier geometry is absorbed into a fluid and expansive system, where structure becomes the site of tension, and the painting itself functions as a dynamic, continuously shifting whole.

Works ‘Untitled’, 1994 and ‘Untitled’, 1995 by Evgeny Chubarov are now on view at the gallery’s space in Dubai Design District.

In his work, Evgeny Chubarov developed his own idiosyncratic visual language and a totality of imagery. His abstract compositions are the objectification of the borderline states with a constant conflict of core elements. The duality and contrast enhancement from one side and the harmony and return to the clear abstraction from the other.

“I’m extremely fascinated by the theories of evolution. I’ve read all of Darwin’s and Richard Dawkins’ books, among others. As an artist, I’m also drawn to religion because art is another form of faith.” — Wim Delvoye

By combining meticulous craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, Delvoye transforms a familiar cultural symbol into a dynamic, ever-evolving structure. This fusion of natural and conceptual forms prompts reflection on the shifting role of such imagery in contemporary culture and how these traditions continue to adapt in a modern context.

‘Old Enemy, New Victim’, 2007 by Tony Matelli  presents a carefully composed scene: a monkey under attack by two predatory animals. Executed in silicone, resin, and wool, the sculpture reflects Matelli’s sustained interest in material verisimilitude.

The monkey’s exposed posture suggests both vulnerability and irony, inviting reflection on power, instinct, and projection. Through precise craftsmanship and controlled emotional register, the work exemplifies Matelli’s approach, in which realism supports conceptual and metaphorical inquiry.

“The important thing is that a work has to look fresh, to have its own idea and psychology. True or false doesn’t matter, as long as it’s disturbing or funny.” — Peter Saul .saul.official

The artist’s viewing room “Selected Bad Paintings” is now available - https://tatintsian.com/viewing-room/32-online-viewing-room-peter-saul/

Peter Saul is widely regarded as one of the most influential American painters of the postwar era. His work merges the expressive intensity of Pop Art with elements of underground comics and social satire, forming a highly personal visual language that defies clear categorization.

Driven by intuition, humor, and a deep interest in psychology, Saul’s paintings are deliberately excessive, unsettling, and often funny. They resist fixed distinctions between truth and fiction, good and bad taste. For more than five decades, he has rejected refinement in favor of intensity, immediacy, and emotional impact.

“There are forces greater and more vast than human beings, such as nature and the cosmos—forces I wish to observe and question. Today, we tend to favor what is simple and light, but I believe that artists should instead step back, withdraw for a moment to gain perspective, and make the power and vitality of the world perceptible. It is this essential energy that they should seek to express.” — Lee Ufan

Founding member of the Japanese Mono-ha movement, artist Lee Ufan speaks about the importance of spirituality in his work and its evolution since the 1960s.
