Michael Heyns
19-02-1946 – 17-06-2025
Michael Heyns was born on 19 February 1946 in Potchefstroom. He earned a Fine Arts degree from University of Pretoria in 1967.
Michael Heyns was a renowned South African artist celebrated for his versatility and prolific creative output, which included paintings, sculptures, and pottery. His work is distinguished by its emotional depth, technical excellence, and distinctive fusion of realism and symbolism.
Among his many artistic expressions, Michael’s flower paintings remain his most cherished and widely admired works. Far more than decorative subjects, these paintings were profound meditations on the cycles of life, death, and renewal. In their delicate beauty and luminous presence, Michael found a form of redemption—a means of rising above moments of personal darkness and destruction. Today, these works endure as powerful symbols of grace, resilience, and fragile hope.
Michael was a master of technique—disciplined, meticulous, and unwavering in his commitment to excellence. Yet for all his perfectionism, his art was never detached or sterile. It possessed warmth, vitality, and a deeply human quality. Each work invited a dialogue: between artist and medium, between artist and subject, and ultimately between artist and viewer. Through this rare balance of technical brilliance and emotional authenticity, Michael created art that continues to resonate long after the first encounter.
