"The Group Areas Act of 1950, which allowed the government to ‘proclaim’ residential and business areas in towns and cities for designated race groups (including Indians and coloureds), was also based on prior segregationist legislation. The ‘Group’ was extensively used to remove communities and individuals who found themselves living in the ‘wrong’ place, most notoriously in the racially mixed and politically vibrant areas of District Six (Cape Town) and Sophiatown (Johannesburg)."
