15 October 1993: A Nobel Peace Prize for a country in transition

In October 1993, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela as joint recipients of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. The Committee recognised their work towards the peaceful end of apartheid and the foundations of a new democratic South Africa.

For South Africa, the announcement came at a pivotal moment - negotiations were continuing and the country was moving towards its first democratic election.

Thirty-three years later, the Nobel Peace Prize remains an important part of FW de Klerk's legacy: a recognition of the possibility of resolving deep conflict through negotiation, compromise and reconciliation.

A new chapter begins

On 20 September 1989, FW de Klerk was inaugurated as State President of South Africa. In his inaugural address, he reaffirmed the vision he had expressed earlier that year after becoming Leader of the National Party:

“Our goal is a new South Africa; a totally changed South Africa; a South Africa which has rid itself of the antagonisms of the past; a South Africa free from domination or oppression in whatever form…”

A significant moment on the road to South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

For more than 20 years, the South African Charity Golf Day (for the last 15 years Nedbank South African Charity Golf Day) has helped make a difference in the lives of vulnerable South Africans.

Since 2003, when President FW de Klerk became Patron of the initiative, its generous support has enabled the FW de Klerk Foundation to assist selected organisations that make a meaningful contribution to the lives of persons with disabilities and young people facing social and economic challenges.

A lasting legacy is one that continues to make a difference.
