Happy Heritage Day everybody!

What better way to be treated like a King today and learn more about Tutanhkamun’s Heritage? Hurry, the expo closes on 27 September!

World-famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass presents the “Object of the Week”.

Part 7: The Throne of King Tutankhamun

This is one of the most impressive objects in the museum, and shows clearly how the ancient artists had reached a peak of skill and ability. This beautiful wooden chair is covered in a thin layer of gold, with inlays of semiprecious stones and silver.

The arms are modelled in the form of winged snakes, wearing the Double Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, guarding the two cartouches of Tutankhamun. The chair legs are made in the form of lion’s paws, and are also topped with lion’s heads.

On the front of the throne is a beautiful scene of Queen Ankhesenpaaten leaning with affection towards her husband, who is seated on a chair; she touches him gently with one hand, and holds a perfume vessel in the other. The king is shown here wearing a wig and a complex crown; below he wears a long kilt. Between both figures the Aten shines its rays down upon them. A row of four uraei can be seen on the back of the throne.

Part 6: The Head of King Tutankhamun Emerging from a Lotus

Howard carter found this piece, which represents the king as the god Nefertum, at the entrance of the corridor leading into the tomb.

It is probable that this was not its original location, and so it may have been moved by thieves at some point in antiquity. The king’s head can be seen emerging from a lotus, which was an important symbol of birth and resurrection in ancient Egypt; he is shown shaven-headed, with pierced ears.
