José Luis Torres: Dérives. Curated by Alix Voz. On view at Cambridge, Art Galleries, Preston through to March 17, 2024.

"This project materializes as an immersive and organically designed architectural ensemble, beckoning visitors to explore its depths and take ownership of the space itself. In the form of a nomadic game, handcrafted wooden structures adorned with vibrant hues are open to exploration and the pleasures of experiencing them as one sees fit"

«Le projet se présente comme un ensemble sculptural organique et immersif en quête d’exploration, jouant avec le rapport d’échelle en fonction de l’appropriation qu’en fait le visiteur. Sous la forme d’un jeu nomade, des constructions en bois peint invitent à les explorer, à se les approprier et à s’en réjouir comme bon nous semble.»

Outerwhere is a new body of work in which Sethi alters and adorns the inner linings of 12 winter coats. The winter coat is the first-acquired and single-most important item of clothing for newcomers when landing in cold climates. Presented within a circle, Outerwhere shares stories related to diasporic South Asian experiences and themes of migration, identity, historical trauma, resilience, and memory.

Symposium Piece for Eva by Canadian sculptor Hadyn Davies (1921 – 2008) has been installed at our Queen’s Square location since 1997. After an extensive deaccessioning process, which included consultation with the artist’s family, it has been decided that the work will be removed from its location, and returned to the family. As a community, we have enjoyed this important Canadian sculpture for over 25 years.

“The gallery has been proud to display this work for our community for more than 25 years and is saddened to see it go, however, respecting the artistic integrity of the original work is of great importance. We are pleased to see the work be returned to the family and we will honour Haydn Davies and his contributions to public art through upcoming programming” - Alix Voz, Gallery Director/Curator

Cotton Exchange is on view at our Preston Gallery along with Articles of Clothing until November 26. These works use the concept of image reproduction or ‘copying’ to focus on and disrupt assumptions related to the labouring bodies involved in cloth and garment manufacturing. In Cotton Exchange, Meera translates into painting a bas relief sculpture found on the exterior of the historic Cotton Exchange Building in Mumbai.
