The opening reception for PHANTASM by Darcy Sedgwick is tomorrow at from 4PM - 5PM! .cyy
About the artist:
My name is Darcy Sedgwick and my work focuses on figurative illustration where I work digitally and traditionally. I tend to use watercolour and acrylic ink when working traditionally and enjoy experimenting with the unpredictability of these mediums, especially in creating backgrounds. I often overlay pencil crayon to create pattern, decoration and texture. The illustrative look of my work and vibrant colour palettes is something I have developed over the years, inspired by graphic novels and cartoons from childhood.

This body of work explores fantasy and surrealism as a mode of perceiving memory and experience. Symbolism is a heavy theme in my work, most noticeably seen in natural elements and patterns in the backgrounds. There are also references to European history to convey the relevance of the past to the future, connecting back to the theme of memory, whether it be your own or intergenerational. I overlay repetitive patterns and decorations to help create texture and depth. I am interested in the complexity of using cartoonish figures and vivid colours to portray heavier themes and how this affects the perception of my work.

Stomach Ache is a collection of intaglio and lithograph prints that examine the artist’s Vietnamese and Canadian heritage through food. The Vietnamese noodle soup, phở is often a reminder of displacement and alienation from Emily’s Vietnamese heritage rather than a memory of home and familiar comfort. This body of work reflects on her relationship to the dish through the repetitive nature that comes with the act of printmaking akin to trying again and again to reconnect and reconstruct one's heritage.

We are so excited 🎉 to announce our upcoming project with .otherhearts The Invisible Artist Carnival! Catch this project at at Alderney Landing, the show starts at 6:30PM. (masks required and provided for all attendees).
The Invisible Artists Carnival is a multi-disciplinary performance work created by Other Hearts with Erin Ball. The production focuses on a collection of rag-tag circus folk led by Patches T. Barker, Applique von Battenburg and Buttons. Over the course of the show, they make various attempts to contact The Invisible Artists (portrayed and created by artists from Halifax's Mad and Disability communities), a legendary, multi-faced figure who vanished several years ago. These attempts vary in form, from clown turns and aerial silks to cinema projection and audience participatory ritual, and ultimately succeed, culminating in a theatrical carnival of light, music, and creative joy.

❤️ MEET SALLY, ONE OF OUR ARTISTIC CO-DIRECTORS! ❤️

Sally Wolchyn-Raab is an interdisciplinary artist, Artist-Run Centre nerd and critical writer working with intersectional feminist and community-based approaches to science, body and space. She merges a range of mediums from drawing, printmaking, craft, performance and electronics to produce works that examine our historic and societal relationships to the natural world using the human body as context and foreground.

Here's why she thinks Eyelevel deserves your support:

"I really believe in the power of artist-run centres, and art co-ops and collectives. To me, these spaces are more than sites for art-making and exhibiting. These are spaces where people build and find community, where resources are accessed and where mutual aid is shared. They can be places of healing and connection and informal front-line care. Getting involved with Eyelevel was the first thing that I did when I first moved to Kjipuktuk, and it became the centre point of my life personally, socially and professionally.

As an artist, I have been held by artist-run centres and co-ops throughout my entire career far more than any other kind of arts organization. As one of Eyelevel's Directors, it is an honour to try and return the care and nourishment through the work that we do here. One of the biggest ways I want to do that at Eyelevel is by trying to understand and expand what it means to value the labour of artists and provide meaningful support to them. This can be deep work and something that requires time, care, trial and error and a lot of money. Supporting Eyelevel means supporting this work, and showing that we, as a city or province or neighbourhood, actually do see all of the amazing things that artists bring to our communities, and we value their livelihood and well-being."

🔥MEET OUR HEAT WAVES ARTISTS! 🔥

One of the most fun, most rewarding things we do here at Eyelevel is offer our HEAT WAVES artist residency!

Designed as a soft-juried, low-pressure program, Eyelevel invites four artists every August to make use of our studio space in the and collect a materials fee so they can focus on working on any project they like!

This year, we have four talented artists who are now part of the Eyelevel community!

Photo 1: is a Brazilian-Canadian interdisciplinary artist residing in Oakville, Ontario and the internet. Their practice consists of drawing, illustration, pattern-making, mixed-media, video, and animations while including a love for creating narrative and characters that pair with her current themes of nostalgia, love, and daydreaming.

Photo 2: is an artist and printmaker working across print disciplines with a focus in screen and intaglio. She used ideas of layering and trace to explore collective experiences felt on a personal level.

Photo 3: (BFA 2009) creates artwork rooted in her experience in psychosis, her fluctuating relationship with animals, and the intense visual experience of colour she experiences during these times. Kayti aims to create a lighter way to introduce some of the symptoms of psychosis into approachable work.

Photo 4: .png is a Nigerian artist who specializes in capturing human emotions through her exquisite oil-based portraits. With a unique background in biology, Oyinda’s artistic journey began when she discovered her profound passion for painting while working on a personal project of depicting her loved ones.

HEAT WAVES is one of the many ways Eyelevel supports the artistic community in a profound and meaningful way.

In order to keep providing even more opportunities for artists, we need your support!
