General Meeting tonight Monday, June 10: Quilts by Khristel Johnson
You’re invited
LAA & PAL General Meeting
Monday June 10, 2024, 7.30pm
Bothwell Arts Center
2466, 8th Street, Livermore, 94550
Hosted by LAA , Demo/Talk by Khristel Johnson

Khristel Johnson is a mother of two and an educator teaching American history for over 30 years. Khristel published her first 3-part series entitled, From the Plantation to the White House which was about a single discovery about “Pit Schools”. Later, she embarked on a self discovery journey and started making quilts. She uses authentic African fabrics and beads experimenting with colors and designs. Her knowledge helped her integrate the 3 dimensional handmade art, resulting in a 50- quilt collection. She hopes that she can inspire others to embark on their personal journey and seek a more inclusive, accurate and comprehensive understanding of the African American Experience.

Demo: Khristel Johnson will give an introduction about herself and how she got into making Quilts. She will talk about the Fabrication - Assembly process and the driving forces which resulted in 50 plus quilts.

"When I was a child, my parents took me to visit art museums throughout Europe. Educated in a school of graphic arts in Paris, I worked there for many years as an illustrator before moving to California, and started to paint as an independent artist in the early 90s. My work has been shown at galleries in Davis, Los Gatos, Sacramento, and San Francisco, California.
Watercolor is a wonderful medium, particularly if you paint on the spot and complete a picture before the light changes. However, this medium is also very versatile and forgiving. Working in my studio, I find that it is possible to satisfy my past illustrator’s attachment to details, and admiration for etchings. Watercolor allows me to have both undefined and precise areas, working with the contrast of light and shadow, transparency and opacity in the same picture.
Although it remains difficult to express with words my motivation to start a picture, it is often a recollection of a particular place, kept in a memory or in a photograph. The distance in space and time makes me reflect upon this special moment. After some composition and color research, I try to visually capture harmony, mystery and balance, looking for a certain feeling of well-being which I hope to share with others."

General Meeting on Monday, May 13 at 7:30pm With Lucy Beck at Pleasanton Cultural Arts Building😊

You’re invited to the May 2024 General Meeting!
This event will be hosted by the Pleasanton Art League
Venue: Cultural Arts Building, 4477 Black Avenue, Pleasanton
Date & Time: Monday, May 13, 2024 at 7:30pm
Guest Speaker: Lucy Beck
Topic- Starting with a blank canvas: Using photography to create art

As a photographer, Lucy Beck creates pictures that are detailed yet light as air, often looking like watercolors. She “paints” with light, to show the remarkable beauty in the small flowers we may have in our gardens, buy at grocery stores or florists. Her portraits of individual flowers, or arrangements, show both the inherent beauty and detailed structure of the flowers and also the unique beauty of her designs, determined by how the flowers relate to each other. Whether photographing on a lightbox, or on a dark background, she uses essentially the same technique to create a painterly effect. ❤️

Using lightbox photography, Lucy will demonstrate how she transforms simple subjects (like flowers) into stunning art. Learn about this unique technique to use it on your favorite subjects.❤️

The Pleasanton Art League was honored to receive a Proclamation from Pleasanton Mayor Karla Brown and City Councilmembers to recognize April 2024 as Arts, Culture & Creativity Month. 😊
To celebrate this occasion , PAL organized PAL’s Pals Youth Art Show for Middle and High School students on April 13 & 14, which was a huge success at the Stoneridge Shopping Center . ❤️
We’re very grateful to the Alameda County Arts Commission and California for the Arts for initiating this Arts Advocacy at all City levels and donating watercolor activity sheets. These were enjoyed by many at the mall! School students volunteered to help visitors and PAL is delighted to award volunteer hours for their community service. 🎉🤗
Swipe to see some wonderful moments captured as part of PAL’s Pals show!
