H**py Hanukkah! 🕎 It’s well established that, for millennia, cannabis has been used as food and fiber, as well as for medicinal and sacramental purposes by many ancient cultures
but would it surprise you to know that the Hebrews were among them? 🕎

It was 22 years ago today that the second of two gay cannabis activists were gunned down by police on their farm in Vandalia, Michigan, after a five-day siege that some have called “The Waco of Weed.”

Tom Crosslin and Rollie Rohm were the owners and operators of Rainbow Farm—a 35-acre property where they hosted annual pro-cannabis festivals (such as H**p Aid, the Roach Roast, and High Times’ World H**p Expo Extravaganja) that attracted famous performers and activists (such as Tommy Chong, Merle Haggard, and Big Brother and the Holding Company) and became the state’s hub of cannabis legalization efforts. That is, until an ambitious local prosecutor made it his mission to destroy their lives.

In this extended episode of Cannthropology, The Infamous Bobby Black speaks with Tom Crosslin’s nephew Boss Jr Crosslin, who not only attended all of the events at Rainbow Farm but has made it his personal mission to uncover the truth behind his uncle’s murder and keep his legacy alive. During this candid interview, Crosslin fondly remembers the good that his uncle Tom and life partner Rollie did for the community, the positive impact of their events, and how the harassment they faced drove them to the desperate acts of defiance that caused their deaths—revealing crucial information from police reports that authorities have tried to cover up.

“Further Education”

Despite being “too young to be a beatnik and too old to be a hippie,” author Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters played a pivotal role in transitioning between the two subcultures and launching the psychedelic revolution.

Episode #22 - The Origin of 420

Tomorrow, stoners around the world will be celebrating our high holiday—April 20th, or 4/20. But how exactly did 420 become the official number of cannabis? Over the years, there have been several myths circulated about it: that it was some police code related to w**d, or that it’s the number of chemical compounds in the plant
but believe it or not, the ultimate ma*****na meme was actually started over 50 years ago by a group of teenagers in Marin County, California known as The Waldos. How it evolved from an inside joke amongst a handful of high schoolers into the worldwide phenomenon it is today is a truly remarkable story—one that you’re about to hear from some of the the founding fathers of 420 themselves.

In this episode of Cannthropology, host Bobby Black speaks with two of the five original 420 Waldos — Steve Capper and Dave Reddix, aka Waldo Steve and Waldo Dave, who explain the origins behind their groups’ name, how 420 became their secret code for w**d, and how two counterculture institutions—The Grateful Dead and High Times magazine —helped spread the 420 phenomenon around the world. World of Cannabis is saddened to learn of the loss of legendary smuggler, activist and educator Robert Platshorn—better known as Bobby Tuna, former leader of the Black Tuna Gang.

Operating out of Miami in the 1970s, the Black Tuna Gang allegedly smuggled around 500 tons of Santa Marta Gold w**d out of Columbia before getting busted by the FBI. Convicted in 1980, Platshorn spent nearly 30 years behind bars for a non-violent ma*****na charge before finally being released in 2008–on, of all days, April 1st. That’s right, folks—Bobby Tuna was freed from his mortal coil on the anniversary of the day that he was freed from prison.

Since his release from prison, he remained a steadfast and effective advocate for the plant —attending conventions and rallies, and re-educating seniors about the misconceptions and benefits of cannabis. He was a badass with heart of gold—a true legend that will be remembered fondly and missed.

Rest in power, Bobby Tuna.

Today we mourn the loss of a truly great man—the “Father of Cannabis Research,” award winning Israeli chemist Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who we learned passed away yesterday at the age of 92.

No man has done more to advance the understanding of cannabinoids and their effects on the human body than Dr. Mechoulam. He and his team were the first to isolate and map the structure of CBD and THC, the first to identify CBC, Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC, and the first to posit the idea of the “entourage effect.” His research also led to the groundbreaking discoveries of cannabinoid receptors and the endocannabinoid system.

Dr. Mechoulam’s work has provided the academic foundation for the future of medical cannabis advancements; the importance of his contributions to the field cannot be overstated.

For more on the life and career of Dr. Mechoulam, read the January 2023 edition of Cannthropology — “The Chemistry of Cannabinoids”—on the World of Cannabis website (link in first comment below).

NEW EPISODE!!! (link in comments)

In our last episode of Cannthropology for 2022, we welcome to the show legendary cannabis cultivator, activist, and author, Ed Rosenthal—a.k.a. The Guru of G***a.

In this in-depth interview, host Bobby Black asks Ed about his time with the 60s radical group the Yippies, his friendship with High Times founder Tom Forcade and his long, complicated relationship with the magazine, his controversial arrest and trial in the early 2000s, and his many books and other projects.

Over the past half century, Ed Rosenthal has authored or co-authored nearly 20 books on cannabis (including 1974’s groundbreaking classic “Indoor/Outdoor Ma*****na Growers Guide”) which have collectively sold over two million copies. The eccentric cultivator, activist, and educator is also credited with discovering Durban Poison and Afghan #1, and co-founding both High Times magazine and Amsterdam’s famous Hash, Ma*****na and H**p Museum. It’s no wonder he’s come to be known as “the guru of ganja.”

Today is the 33rd anniversary of the launch of Operation Green Merchant—the most significant and sweeping attempt by the US Justice Department to eradicate cannabis growing in the United States.

In this special double-sized episode of Cannthropology, host Bobby Black marks the occasion by welcoming to the show a Drug War POW who holds the unfortunate distinction of having served the longest jail sentence of anyone arrested as part of that massive sting operation—Michael Wolf Segal.

Segal is a former columnist for Sinsemilla Tips Magazine , former co-host of “The Farmer in the Sky” The Farmer in the Sky Radio Hour, author of the 1985 book "Growing Indoors for Fun and Profit," and inventor of the game-changing Sea of Green (SOG) and Screen of Green (S***G) grow techniques.

This eccentric, entertaining, and highly loquacious cannabis cultivation pioneer recounts stories from his guerilla grow days and delves deep into his extensive experience with ma*****na growing techniques and technologies—including some next-level knowledge on the science of lighting. So if you’re a grow geek, you don't want to miss this one!
