Regimes Museum "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” It offers resources to scholars and students while applying lessons of the past to the present.

Regimes Museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational institution dedicated to the study and prevention of tyranny. It is the culmination of an effort to collect, preserve, and archive material and artifacts from some of the most notorious regimes of the twentieth century. Since 2003, the goal of our ever-growing collection has been to preserve the cultural, political, social, and personal artifacts a

nd histories of individuals who were witnesses to some of the most notorious regimes of the twentieth century. Our collections focus on what life was like for both victims and ordinary citizens; we study all aspects of these regimes, from personal histories to cultural aspects to political and military structures. Through our archive, educational materials, oral history program, community outreach, and ongoing research, we hope to broaden the understanding of the nature of repressive regimes in the various forms, cultures, and nations they existed in. The repression, suffering, and destruction caused by rogue governments are a persistent and repeating phenomenon that can be seen throughout history. We hope to help break this cycle, paving the way to a kinder world. Learn more at regimesmuseum.org.

"I recently read Roland Sarti’s cheery little 1971 book, Fascism and the Industrial Leadership in Italy, 1919-1940. I’ll write about it in a future post; it’s dense and I want to think about how to clearly explain its economic analyses. For this post, I want to focus on a dialectic implicit to the throughline of the book: the Fascist movement’s tension between economic and cultural focuses. This post argues that such a dialectic can be seen outside the narrow field of industrial policy. The three sets of lyrics to the PNF (National Fascist Party) anthem, written at different points in Fascist movement’s history, provide a vivid demonstration of this tension."

"Reading the news from Iran, I’m struck by a simple question: why have senior members of the IRGC not defected? Under the classic assumptions of game theory, we should expect elite defections among Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and/ or senior clerics. Yet we see none, not even rumors, at least so far. Part of the explanation lies not in strict, classic game-theory, but more in empirical and political-theoretical evidence that autocratic regimes tend to select for mediocrity for exactly this reason — to forestall coups."

This post explores the use of iconography and symbolism as tools of far-right radicalization, in conversation with Cynthia Miller-Idriss' book "Hate in the Homeland." It's well worth a read!

Dec. 21, 2025 marks the hundredth anniversary of the release of Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin, about a mutiny on a Russian warship stationed in the Black Sea during the Russo-Japanese war. If you haven’t seen it: watch it! The film itself is engrossing, and its impact on cinematography is difficult to overstate: from the iconic Odessa steps montage to the colorful red flag flying against a grey sky, the film has earned a century of homages…
