JOHNNY APPLESEED ( John Chapman; September 26, 1774 – March 18, 1845 ) was an American pioneer nurseryman, who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Illinois. Decades later, while there were many thousands of such trees planted during his lifetime, including many in Mansfield, Ashland, Galion, and the surrounding area, many believe that the sole surviving specimen is located in the small Ohio town of Nova. That Rambo Apple tree is one of an orchard planted about 1830. A piece of that Apple tree trunk is preserved in a display. The apples that Johnny planted were green, small and tart “spitters”… from seeds he gathered from cider mills. They may not have been the perfect fresh-eating apple, but they were the perfect apples for hard cider or vinegar.

Have you ever been inside a blacksmith shop? When you step inside our Blacksmith shop one of the first things you notice is the familiar sights, sounds, and smells of an 1800’s Smithy.

Inside the shop, relics from the past tell the story of how the shop adapted to local needs. The forge built for the shop is a replica of a forge that was once a working forge in the area. Great care was taken to recreate the forge along with skill and craftsmanship.

We open our doors on August 26 & 27, 2023 from 1-3pm. The blockhouse and cabin will be open to the public. This is free to the public. We are located in South Park, 100 Brinkerhoff Ave., Mansfield, Ohio.
