🌊1️⃣9️⃣7️⃣4️⃣-1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣4️⃣ 📖 10 + 2 years story of MARKER Surf - Double anniversary for the third /?/ oldest sailboard manufacturer ⛷️🏄
As an active skier I had been a user and fan since 1976. When I learned that this legendary company also made sailboards, naturally I wanted to get one. I finally got it much later as a donation from Andreas Klein 🎁🙏, quite symbolically just in a year of two Marker anniversaries. Marker-story deserves a proper article in time. Now just a few facts, hopefully interesting for some:
In 1952, Hannes Marker 🇩🇪, ski instructor and journalist, developed a line of ski bindings that was sold under his name. Company soon became one of the most successful and influential binding manufacturers in the world.
In 1️⃣9️⃣7️⃣4️⃣, Hannes Marker began manufacturing "Marker Surf" sailboards under the H. Scheweitzer´s licence. This made him one of the earliest serial board manufacturers *. Soon Hannes met Jurgen Honscheid and offered him a job in sailboard development and in 1978 sent him to the first World Cup in Hawaii. Reports highlight Jurgen´s performance on Custom Marker as the best European, at 4th place overal starting with „self made GRP board made especially for waves“.
In 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣0️⃣, the Marker founder sold the ski binding company to an American corporation..
BUT❗… Hannes Marker was allowes to use the Marker family name in connection with Marker Surf (later renamed to H.G.M. Surf) using „the sloping M" trademark.
The outcome of the successful cooperation between H.M. and J.H. was the MARK 1, which was the fastest mass-produced board in 9/81 at the Euro-funboard-regatta in Sylt. This Is th board you can see at the Windsurfing Museum Prague.
Since 1983 to 1984 Marker offered pintail funboards ranging from 295 to 365 cm, shaped by John Hall and produced in Israel.
In 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣4️⃣ H.G.M. Surf 🇩🇪 filed bankruptcy and was liquidated..
BUT❗…
The production in /unidentified/ Israeli factory "under the name M“ continued. At least 700 sailboards showing the Marker name and logo were ordered for 1986 season for 🇺🇸 market…
and thats the last trace of the red „M“ logo we found 🕵️
Epilogue:
Epilogue: Mr. Hannes Marker, a man who registered hundreds** of patents in the skiing and surfing sector was a keen surfer to the age of 79! He passes away in 2000 at the age of 82.👏

🌊 Yes, we're OPEN! 🤗 Guided tours of our exhibit continue on weekends in October and by appointment. Windsurfing has not been a mass sport for a long time, but at the 🏰🏄‍♂️ in September it almost looked like it * = a museum curator's dream. Thanks Zámecká Stáj Stránov & Co. 🐎🛩️, you guys were great. I look forward to seeing you ALL! 🤙

🚧 A few technical organizational notes for your future Windsurfing Museum Prague visit: The floor load capacity of the 17th century exhibition building has been tested for a maximum of 30 people. Visits are therefore divided into groups of up to 20 people. Please book your group visits in advance that we can provide more fun and smart guides 👨‍🏫 Capacity of the Zámek Stránov 🏰 car park is sufficient for several buses 🚌🚌🚌
*) Yes, I admit, this doesn't happen every weekend 😉

Upřímnou soustrast Karlově rodině a jeho nejbližším 🖤

🌊Big Museum Day 7-9-24 👉 LieblinXfleck 🇩🇪 @ Windsurfing Museum Prague 🏄🏰.
We 💙 your 🎁! I admit I deserve it, but my friend Andreas Klein, a serious collector himself, is already spoiling me 🤩. 🚛🚚 Second Complete Turnkey Delivery: this time 10 sails, Marker + m* Naish boards & accessories + transport of gifts from kind Bay Ulrike 🙏- her Alpha slalom board and very personal 💎 artifacts 🥰. 🌊 What ‘70s and ‘80s FRONT COVERS were iconic for you? And what do You read when the wind isn't blowing? 🏖️ With our friends and collaborators Ben and Pierre, we've reflected on which magazine covers have become "iconic" and captured the spirit & rapid evolution of our sport. Check out the link (bellow in comments) and remind us of your favourite covers 📚 And of course, if you have all your old magazines checked out and staged, we'd love your donations to the Windsurfing Museum Prague Library 🤗

🌊 Welcome The TUBE! 🇦🇹 You can never have enough of these 80's customs & art creations 🤗 double* mastbox, wings/flyers, 🐅 paint... With a standard serial product you can get a period brochure, but here you have to take the word of our donator 👏 Harald Marbler: "... the TUBE was made specially for lake Garda and has about 70 or 80 litres, is quite narrow for the time build. Was a really fast and fun board. I got it from some older friends back in the days when I was 16/17ish loved it when there was enough wind... mostly I used that 5.6 sail or 3.8. Dankeschön Harald 🙏
*)I can clearly see the inspiration from the Bombora 🦘 boards. What about you? Check the comments 👇

🌊 Olympic 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣4️⃣ - (part 2). The 2024 Olympic sailboarding races are starting today in Marseille. Will it be a close fight like it was 4️⃣0️⃣ years ago in Long Beach? Let's recall in detail those moments with the original 📰 SURFEN magazine 🇩🇪 report. Let's commemorate and remember 🎆 Of course I am aware that even after decades many friends here don't like Windglider. Let's dedicate this post to celebration of athletes and sporting battles of our first Olympics. Let's address the political and business battle between Windsurfer and Windglider some other time 😎🔫 Don't Shoot the Messenger, please ☮️🤙

Pic 4 - pg 46
1st run
After a successful start, the field pulled up to the windward buoy in a wind force of just three.
In ninth position at times, Dirk Meier worked his way up to second place at the finish. Guillerot gradually increases his lead, the Swede also loses ground and ends up ninth.
Bruce Kendall, light wind specialist from New Zealand in second place, the favorites Stefan van den Berg and Klaus Maran remained below their expectations with fourth and sixth place.
Two hours after entry. During the race, Guillerot was disqualified for pumping. Meier moves up to first place.
2nd run
When the wind is very light, the regatta management initially waits for half an hour, but then starts. The first windward buoy sees the Thai and the Chinese, both lightweights, at the lead. Scott Steele and Stefan van den Berg both move forward, but the Dutchman has no chance of winning against Steele. The Thai Saard Panyawan can at least hold on to seventh place, while Dirk Meier, in 14th place, pushed himself out of the top of the overall ranking. Kendall takes the lead.
3rd run
When the winds are somewhat stronger, the American Steele dominates. Klaus Maran, who starved himself down to 65 kilograms of body weight in the run-up to the games, did not manage to catch up with the leaders in the third run either; he always remained behind van den Berg. With a respectable lead, Steele and van den Berg go to the last triangle, and The Dutchman takes the lead on the space strikes. He crosses the finish line first and is now also in the lead overall, although he has the same number of points as the surprising American.
4th run
Anyone who continues to hope for strong winds will be disappointed again: the worst sufferer is van den Berg, who is first overall, who misses the start and can then only move up to eleventh place (I'm slower than the light ones, they're on the cross).. always in the way").
Pic 5 - Pg 47
Scott Steele got off to an optimal start and was able to break away from the field straight away. The situation for Klaus Maran (6th) and Gildas Guillerot (16th) is becoming increasingly unfavorable. Your chances of winning a medal have become vanishingly small. Dirk Meier was able to hold on to fourth place despite finishing 20th.
He's just three points behind third, while Steele is now leading again. (His comment: Hopefully the winds stay light, as I can't control strong winds.")
5th run
Klaus Maran ahead of Steele, Guillerot and Stefan van den Berg. They maintain this order at around ten to twelve knots. Then Maran pulls away on the second cross and secures his first race win. Steele falls back to ninth but retains the overall lead. Dirk Meier comes twelfth and, 20 points behind, still has a chance of a bronze medal.
6th run
Gildas Guillerot sits down after a super start
Lead of the field, which he doesn't give up until the finish. Because the wind is picking up slightly, the American is having some trouble. Van den Berg takes advantage of this, he covers the American and surfs his way to second place. He has thus taken over the overall lead again, with Kendall surprisingly establishing himself in third place ahead of Maran. Meier's medaille chances are also purely theoretical.
7th run
Everyone knows their starting position: Guillerot and Maran only have a very small chance... for an Olympic medal, Kendall and Steele have to keep their deficit in the strong wind regattas within limits, and van den Berg wants to ensure victory with a good performance. One place behind Steele is enough for him. Maran can't cope with the stress and ends up ninth. Steele falls further back, almost risking his silver medal. Stefan van den Berg came third in this run and was able to extend his lead and win the gold medal.🥇

🌊 Once upon a time, 4️⃣0️⃣ years ago... Olympic Dream - part 1 💚 She* was an unaffordable dream for us mere mortals: the NORTH SAILS "Vertical / Mylar / Heineken**". In 1983 She was selected as one-design sail for the very first Olympic regatta. She looked so 🆒 in the hands of my heroes🏅Stephan, Klaus, Scott ... Dream of a coveted sail became reality after many years... Today in our museum collection we have the NS "Vertical" in ~7 versions 🤗 This Mylar (totally delaminated) piece didn't race at the Long Beach back then, but whenever I see Her, I recall the Olympic games we weren't even allowed to watch on 📺 (L.A. games 1984 story to be continued - stay tuned) 🔜 🤙
*) I know correctly should be written with IT, but for me it is Her 💃 Forever!!!
**) We used to call this cut 'vertical' , North Sails officially featured it as the 'leech cut'; Btw. guess since when NS co-worked with a known brewery? 🍻🤔
