It brought positive attention to an otherwise unremarkable childhood. My daydream was to play on a uniformed baseball team, driving in winning runs and strutting in front of admiring girls. This was doomed from lack of talent. Availability of materials, relative ease of cleanup and laziness led me to watercolor painting. ists trying to discourage the competition. The immediacy of painting out of doors, on site, pleine aire, the exhilarating, adventurous lack of predictability, produces a result hard to achieve in a studio. Developing a positive attitude, an approach to include self-honesty, willingness to work (the two best times are: A. When one is not.), a sense of humor and an open mind are tools as valuable and necessary to me as a pencil, brush, colors and paper.

This is a great piece on Jack during his time in Beirut.

After the tragic deaths of Marines and US service personnel on 23 October 1983 in Beirut, Lebanon, the decision was made by the Marine Corps to send a combat artist to document the event and aftermath. Within a few weeks, Major John T. “Jack” Dyer, USMCR (Ret.), the curator for the Marine Corps’ art collection, was recalled to active duty and sent to Beirut.

Illustration board is 6X 9 5/8. Protective Plasteek is torn on side. My father passed away in 2014. My dad was a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and took graduate courses at Boston University. | eBay!
