JUNE 20, 1945: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William J. Bly, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division, during the pitched battle at Manaring on 20 June 1945. Captain Bly displayed outstanding courage when he dashed to within ten yards of a Japanese machine gun emplacement and hurled four hand grenades into the embrasures, killing seven of the enemy and destroying the weapon. His valiant action permitted the safe evacuation of six seriously wounded American riflemen. After a temporary withdrawal, during which time friendly artillery fire was placed on the area, Captain Bly led his company in a highly successful assault which resulted in the killing of 40 Japanese and the capture of many weapons and much valuable equipment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

JUNE 19, 1945; The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel Russell A. Ramsey, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. During the attack against strongly defended "Top of the World" Hill near Fort Stotsenburg, Colonel Ramsey observed the action from a hilltop observation post less than 200 yards from enemy positions. Although under continual fire, he remained at his post and observed a well concealed Japanese pillbox which had escaped the attention of our forces. Disregarding the hostile fire, Colonel Ramsey courageously ran to a tank destroyer located in an exposed position beyond the observation post, climbed into it, and manning one of the machine guns, pointed out the hostile emplacement with his accurate fire, enabling other tank destroyers in the vicinity to also place fire on the position and neutralize it. On 19 June 1945 Colonel Ramsey was accompanying an infantry supported armored column through the Cagayan Valley when, along with several other officers, he decided to investigate the possibility of an ambush in thick growth beside the road. They located three enemy tanks, which immediately opened fire and caused numerous casualties to our troops. Colonel Ramsey, who miraculously escaped injury, immediately assisted in clearing the road, and coordinated the fire of our machine guns against the hostile position. He then helped evacuate several casualties, and established contact with our advance elements, which successfully eliminated the ambush. Colonel Ramsey’s service was an outstanding example of alertness, calmness and courage under fire.

JUNE 13, 1945: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Harold Hays, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands on 13 June 1945. While on a mission of obtaining special information required by his Division Commander, Colonel Hays, Assistant Chief of Staff, accompanied the leading elements of the 145th Infantry Regiment in its drive on Cordon on 13 June 1945. Disregarding the dangers incident to front line activity, Colonel Hays went with the infantry as it victoriously entered the city. Continuing his study of the situation and assisting in the evacuation of wounded, he completed his mission and returned to the Division Command Post to render his report. Clearing the southern limits of Cordon, he continued his progress in a quarter-ton vehicle and, as he was entering Ordioung Pass, was fired upon by Japanese ambush. Realizing the importance of the data previously procured and knowing that information concerning the enemy's attempt to block the main supply route should be immediately transmitted to the Commanding General, Colonel Hays elected to runt he gauntlet of hostile fire. Proceeding at maximum speed, his vehicle passed safely through the ambush and arrived without further incident at the Division Command Post. During the period of his reconnaissance with the front line elements, Colonel Hays was fired upon by the Japanese on five different occasions. His devotion to duty exemplifies the highest tradition of military service.

Naudts (ASN: 0-32265), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands. Colonel Naudts was at a roadblock near Bambang on 6 June 1945, directing fire at a Japanese force trying to break through out positions, when a machine gun squad leader was seriously wounded and lay in an exposed position on the road. Colonel Naudts crawled 25 yards under intense hostile fire to the wounded man, dragged him to a shallow ditch along the road, and administered first aid. He then dragged the casualty up the narrow ditch to a covered position where further first aid and blood plasma were given. Colonel Naudts' courageous action was instrumental in saving the life of his fellow soldier.

JUNE 6, 1945: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Joseph C. Lee (ASN: 0-352420), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Combat Engineer Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. When the infantry regiment which his combat engineer company was supporting reached the Magat River on 6 June 1945, Captain Lee, realizing the need of reconnaissance before a crossing could be attempted, moved forward alone to reconnoiter the river. Reaching the water's edge, he waded across the river and determined that the 360 foot span of water could be successfully forded by men and vehicles. He killed two Japanese soldiers while accomplishing his hazardous task and was constantly exposed to enemy observation and fire. As a result of Captain Lee's outstanding skill and courage under perilous conditions, information was secured which enabled the regiment to subsequently effect a quick and successful crossing of the river. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
