Did you know a famous silent film star lived part-time on Pedro Point, in a cottage she had built a short walk from the Ocean Shore Railroad station? That's one of the fascinating tidbits of silent film history presented by the Pacifica Historical Society on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Pacifica Coastside Museum.

Two experts on silent movies, David Kiehn and Rena Azevedo Kiehn, will discuss film productions in the East Bay and in San Mateo County -- and the actors who were famous in their day.

Kiehn is the historian and film preservationist for the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, located at the Edison Theater in Niles, a district of Fremont. He also is the author of Broncho Billy and the Essanay Film Company.

In 2010, he appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes after he discovered "A Trip Down Market Street", an awe-inspiring film of a San Francisco streetcar, shot only four days before the 1906 earthquake.

Rena Azevedo Kiehn is the Niles museum’s public relations and special programs director and also a founding member of the museum. Rena grew up in Linda Mar, graduated from Terra Nova and is the daughter of the late Paul and Lydia Azevedo, who were active in Pacifica organizations. Paul was a longtime Tribune columnist who often wrote about local history.

The Kiehns will touch on the career of Evelyn Selbie, a leading lady of the silent film era. Selbie was a part-time Pedro Point resident in the 1910s when investors of the Ocean Shore Railroad lured residents to their planned coastal development. She was one of the first to build herself a cottage on the subdivided lots, a short walk from the railroad station.

Admission is free to the event at the Pacifica Coastside Museum, 1850 Francisco Blvd. and no RSVPs required.

If you have traveled south on Highway 1 though Pacifica and on to Montara and Half Moon Bay, you will recognize Devil's Slide. In this photo, a short two-car Ocean Shore Railroad passenger train from San Francisco is slowly making it way along the uncertain cliff. In a few more minutes, the train will be making stops at the small but growing towns along the coast. In addition to passenger service, the Ocean Shore provided much needed transportation for farmers to get their produce to San Francisco.

Many portions of Highway 1 were built on Ocean Shore Railroad right-of-way, but this it probably the most infamous section. It is now bypassed by the newly built Tom Lantos tunnels.

Summers in Pacifica and other Coastside towns can be very cold and foggy but come Autumn, the sun starts making its appearance and in late September, people flock to downtown Pacifica for its annual Fog Fest, a music and food festival just blocks from the majestic ocean.

Year round, Pacifica offers its visitors and residents lots of opportunities as surfing, golfing, hiking, walking its many trails, visiting Pacifica's historic castle on the hill, and discovering the Pacifica Coastside Museum with many artifacts from the historic Ocean Shore Railroad Car and a working model of the Ocean Shore Railroad. In the parking lot across the street stands Car 1409, to be uncovered when the restoration is complete.

For this , we investigate the road-turned-hiking-trail that divides Montara from Pacifica. Devil’s Slide may seem like an obvious name for a steep, curved, precarious road hundreds of feet above the water, but when was the name first used? While probably popularized in the early 20th century when frequent landslides sent the Ocean Shore Railroad’s equipment into the ocean, the name dates from earlier. According to Barbara VanderWarf, in the 1880s travelers in horse-drawn wagons observed a large chute in the cliffs around the road and thought it looked “fit for a Devil’s Slide.” And there came the name! Traffic congestion on Highway 1 through Pacifica is not uncommon, but rarely is a rail car occupying the slow lane the cause of the backup.
