Wau Al-Atiq Mosque (Souk Wau Mosque)

The phrase “واو العتيق” translates to “Wau Al-Atiq” in English. “Wau” is a town located in northwestern South Sudan, and “Al-Atiq” means “the ancient” or “the old” in Arabic.

Therefore, “Wau Al-Atiq” is known as “The Ancient Wau” or “The Old Wau,” reflecting its historical significance. It is also noteworthy that “Wau Al-Atiq” holds historical importance as one of the oldest religious institutions in the town, specifically a mosque, built in 1905.

“I started making shoes in 1984,” says Anthony.

In 1984, Anthony embarked on a transformative journey that transcended the ordinary. Working as a driver in Rumbek, Lakes — where he is originally from — he came across people using rubber from old vehicle tires to make shoes. Anthony liked the idea and, so, started to teach himself how to cut rubber and transform it into shoes.

Since he relocated to Wau, this has been one of his main sources of income!

In the heart of South Sudan lies Wau, a town with a fascinating history. Picture it like a painting, woven with different threads of people and stories. Back in the day, Wau started as a place for slave traders. But over time, it became a mix of African groups, soldiers, and freed slaves who left their old ways behind.

Wau’s story includes times when the French and British had a say in its fate. Missionaries also came, bringing their teachings to the town. The Fertit, a diverse group in western Bahr El Ghazal, were an important part of Wau’s local politics.

Now, let’s talk about the Dinka, the largest group in South Sudan. They have a unique way of life, especially with their deep connection to cattle. Imagine them moving with the seasons, caring for their herds and cherishing these animals.

Wau’s tale also involves political events, like pushing back against British rules and figuring out how to govern after they left. People like Ali Tamim Fartak played roles in shaping the town’s destiny.

So, Wau isn’t just a place; it’s a living canvas painted with the stories of its diverse people and their journey through time.
