BVI Art Reef

BVI Art Reef The Art Reef BVI is an "Art—meets World History— Meets Ocean conservation" project in the British Virgin Islands.

The BVI Art Reef is the combination of Art, Ocean Conservation, World History, Science, Education & Economy, to install permanent solutions to marine challenges in the BVIs, and empower its youth to become leaders and stewards of these pristine islands. What if... A WWII warship could mobilize a global network of researchers, philanthropists and artists... to solve marine health problems through t

he Power of Play? This is a charitable endeavor with cause partners Unite BVI, ARK and Beneath the Waves, to save a decorated WW2 ship from being scrapped for metal, and transforming it into a sunken art gallery & artificial reef / coral out-planting site, to rehabilitate endangered marine populations in ways that boost the BVI economy and support marine science research, swim education for BVI youth... all through the Power of Play! Hot off the press! 🎣
BVI Sustainable Seafood guides now being distributed through the territory.
These guides will initially be distributed at a fisherman’s meeting tonight and then begin making their way into grocery stores, markets, restaurants and wherever you are willing to bring one! We all know we see shark, parrot fish, and other species on this “red list” at the stores here, so be a Karen and ask for a manager! Or send an email afterwards to kindly let the establishments know that these species should be avoid being sold for the future of BVI’s reefs.
It is usually always met with appreciation 😊
We are such a small country that we really can make change so easily.

We are happy to announce the US based & tax deductible 501c3 organization "Beyond The Reef International" which will be a sister organization to our BVI ocean conservation causes!

You might know us from our artificial reef sites and wrecks known as the "BVI Art Reef", but did you also know that we have been treating and monitoring Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease in the BVI for the past 2 years along with doing massive coastal cleanups of trash and discarded fishing gear?

Learn more at www.1beyondthereef.com and see what we have been up to and how you can help!

Yesterday Beyond The Reef covered several areas around Peter Island as well as Dead Chest Island.
As you can see, a little bit of Sargassum (okay, maybe a lot of it) can’t stop us!
Our team recovered large items of plastic debris as well as several very large nets (some of the most detrimental to marine life). The largest net was recovered from the ocean and there are still 2/3rds of it down there which our team has gone back to cut free and remove today.
As a marine science based NPO we enjoy data, so here’s some stats of what we have cleaned so far!
49,540’ shoreline
3032 cubic feet of debris cleaned
931 cubic feet plastic
1022 cubic feet fishing gear
856 cubic feet metal
44 cubic feet glass
179 cubic feet other (fiberglass , dinghys, kayak)
15 truck loads
267 working hours!

Last week we did 2 cleanups!
This was from our second one on Camanoe Island.
Thinking of starting “Object of the Week” since we have found some pretty interesting things....
Camanoe’s would be this car seat proudly displayed by GP in the last photo.
Our guys have certainly gotten the hang of best ways to carry large, wet, heavy ropes 💪🏽

This may look like similar netting to last week, but it unfortunately is an entirely new batch collected from the land and shallow waters on the backside of Cooper Island (map area attached).

In areas where it was too rough for the boat to anchor in, recovered nets were manually hiked over the hill from the South East bays and loaded onto our boat (this took twice the effort as some of these ropes are not light, and we hope our guys got a good nights rest!!).

We are systematically mapping the areas that we have cleaned and working our way through the islands.

Right now this is requiring experienced commercial divers to make a big initial dent in these hard to reach areas, but we plan to do community-based clean ups in safer and more accessible areas soon, so look out for posts on how to help!
