I sanded and added a new layer on this wood board which I had originally transferred one of my own digital paintings on. I am yet to decide what to add. I know that and Bn of like the void in the middle and the grunge. Any suggestions?

Geyser by Abol Bahadori 8x8” acrylic on 1.5” deep wood panel. I did this small painting today for the December show at the Van Landginham Gallery . The color palette is so much more interesting than in the photo. I’ve used some pearlescent, florescent and silver leaf that are impossible to photograph. Love to hear from other artists how to best photograph paintings with such effects.

Lake Falls by Abol Bahadori, 16x16” layered watermedia on cold-pressed watercolor paper mounted on wood panel. This is a new addition to my Colorfield Landscape series. I did more free doodling on it than the previous paintings from this series based on my current mood—a more rebellious feeling with a desire to fight for justice. I wanted the lake to leak and trickle down to nourish the hot burning for ground. I let the viewer do a better interpretation because all my expressions come from the subconscious.

I fully identify with this quote from Matisse displayed in the Vertigo of Color exhibit at The Met:
“A color for me is a force. My painting's consist of four or five colors which clash with one another expressively. When I apply green, that does not mean grass. When I apply blue, that does not mean sky.”
— Henri Matisse

Scaffoldom by Abol Bahadori 14x11” layered watermedia on watercolor paper. A new addition to my Colorfield Landscape series inspired by ancient Aztec and modern architecture, a reminder of fragile state of our environment, land erosion, sea level rise and ever increasing invasion of nature. Our modern life style is confronting a faster decay than ancient civilizations for sure.

Red Temple on Blue Wind by Abol Bahadori, 16x16” layered watermedia on cold pressed watercolor paper to be mounted on wood board. This is a new addition to my landscape color fields as part of my Colorfield series. In this painting I’ve distorted, segmented and shifted the color of the grid more intensely compared to previous paintings of this series. My goal was to abstract states of matter—solid temple sitting on top of wind (gas) presented by blue dust and waves of lighter net. The ascending hills float on a lake rather than bordering it. All in all the obscure landscape serves the colors more than depicting any reality.

My painting Portal Mystique was selected by Robert Tillman, juror of the October 2023 Open Exhibit . It is inspired by city of Venice, Italy and my ever evolving desire to combine old and new with inventing new color fields. I am really excited about it as this painting has been a turning point in my recent works initiating my Architectural series. The opening night will be on Friday, October 13, 6-8 pm and I will post a calendar invite as we get closer to that date.

Bosons (close ups) by Abol Bahadori, acrylic on canvas 20×50 inches. This was first painting I did in 2015 with grid-like structure initiating my Perspective series. It was inspired by the science of subatomic particles, the overlapping strings (white and light green) are holding the fabric of the composition, like the bosons of the universe.

Food for Flight by Abol Bahadori 16x16” layered watermedia on 300 lb cold pressed 100% cotton watercolor paper. This is the ninth edition to my Garden Pond series as a sub-series within my Architectural series. Food for Flight is inspired by victory for struggle symbolized by the nasturtium flower and the primal survival instinct of all living animals and plants. They even keep going in artificial ecosystems created by us human beings, such as gardens and ponds. And sometimes they come indoor. Tgeycsay, a hummingbird visit in your house or garden can carry a message from your deceased loved ones. But they will die if you don’t let them fly back to their natural outdoor environment.

Under Triple Suns by Abol Bahadori 16x16” layered watermedia on 100% cotton cold pressed watercolor paper. Inspired by Stanton A. Coblentz’s science fiction novel with the same title. This was one of the first novels I read in English as a teenager learning English as my third language. Written in the early 50s, it is very relevant now with climate change and nuclear threats. The novel concerns the survivors of the destruction of the earth and their attempt at settling a new planet. Also, we now know that majority of planets in the universe rotate around double or triple suns.

Dicxon and I took a hands-on class on or art of lumen printing and wet cyanotype techniques. Many thanks to our dear friend Sam Shelton for volunteering her time and providing us with all the material in her beautiful home to teach us this fascinating process that is based on the earliest photography processes without using a camera. There is much more to learn in this field with so many different photo paper types (expired works best) and subtleties produced by duration of direct sun exposure and different chemicals from fruits and vegetables.

Hesitance by Abol Bahadori 16x16” layered watermedia painted over inkjet print on watercolor paper to be mounted on cradle panel.
This is the seventh addition to my Garden Pond series and it was more labor-intensive than the previous ones as I wanted to achieve a certain level of realism with the 2-point perspective angle, the duck and duckling. My grandfather was a collector of academically painted birds, from pheasants to ducks and as a kid, I thought if I blew hard enough, I could shake their feathers; they were so realistic. Not sure I wanted to achieve that, but just the micro color fields pushed me to segment finely.

Captive by Abol Bahadori 16x16” layered watermedia painted over inkjet print on watercolor paper to be mounted on cradle panel. This is the sixth addition to my Garden Pond series. While previous paintings from this series were depicting depth and space, here I am reflecting on the captivity of the creatures we humans impose on them for our own aesthetic pleasures. I intentionally enlarged the circling fish and enclosed the indoor pond on three sides for focus on the captivity. It still remains within the colorist approach of the series with dominant greens in background and reds and blues (here in darker shades) as accent colors.

Lonely Blue by Abol Bahadori 8×8" layered watermedia on watercolor paper (inkiet as base) to be mounted on cradle panel. This is the fifth painting of my new miniature Garden Pond series. The concepts are to serve the colors and generate interesting color fields. A wide range of greens contained in 2-point perspective depth compose the dominant palette while reds and blues are always accent colors either in the main obiect (fish in this case) or on the edges of the background.

Just finished Buzzing Garden (first and second images), a new addition to my Garden Pond series. This is one of the four miniature sizes (8x8”) which will replace Hovering Pond (slide 3) sold yesterday Van Landingham Gallery. I wear two reading glasses instead of using a magnifying glass. I’ve created the compositions digitally traced or printed on canvas but the magic happens with traditional painting with gouache, acrylic, gel pen and watercolor pencils. I fix the final with spray fixative and add another UV light matte varnish. I don't like any glares under gallery spotlights, especially with small paintings. Visit studio 311, Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, VA now till end of August to see three of these minature paintings plus four larger pieces.

Hovering the Pond from Garden Pond series by Abol Bahadori, 16x16” mixed watermedia on 300 lb cold pressed watercolor paper. I this painting, the dragonfly is reversing the color arrangement of the background in a sense that in the background blues are accent colors where as on the dragonfly blues are dominant but in lighter shades. The warmer colors (yellow-magenta) have the same level of presence on both the background and segmented wings of the fly. This shift in the palette generates a pleasing eye candy. In all three of these paintings I selected an indoor pond concept so that the window frames would create a diagonal upper frame against the edges of the art board for better defining a 2-point perspective.

Blue Frog from Garden Pond series by Abol Bahadori, mixed watermedia on 16x16” cold pressed watercolor paper. I love treating blues as accent colors against all shades of greens. Here orange, light pink and neutral grays help the chromatic push and pull too. As in most of my works, shapes and forms serve the colors—each recognizable object is a color field.

Illuminated Passage by Abol Bahadori, digital illustration using layered by cropped photographs in . I have to admit I’ve tapped to my graphic design skills in this painting more than before and I may continue to do so because what I am interested in is juxtaposition of color fields over neutral shades of realistic or familiar forms and depth. As a colorist I want to explore the chromatic shifts and push and pull of the color palette over unexpected and confusing dimensions. Perhaps (and this is my new theory) our perception of color changes isolating the color field and putting it in surreal locations. Love yo hear more on this from other artists.

Colortrip (work-in-progress) by Abol Bahadori, digital art created in as the base to be printed on 20x24” canvas. Once I receive the print, I will paint over to improve or alter the colors or perhaps change the composition if needed. Unlike my previous color field paintings, I decided to experiment with isolating the brighter section (pushed to the right). I am very pleased with the result as it gives the eye a separate space to shift on and off the vibrance. I think I will do other paintings in this style on lighter backgrounds too.

Floating Islands by Abol Bahadori 11x14” mixed water media and spray paint on canvas. This was an experiment with watercolor over none absorbent surface (dried acrylic) and spray paint over wet surface. I touched up the dried result with fine gel pens and used fixative on top for further water resistance. I am pleasantly surprised about the result.
