As most of you know, I have spent the last several years developing the Hollywood Sound Museum. Because of the pandemic, we started with building our content online through Patreon. We’ve had over 80 webinars, over 100 episodes of our “Soundbites” series, and started sharing rare recordings we’ve collected.

Now that the pandemic has subsided, we have accelerated our plans to move into a physical location. We have multiple storage units with all our assets that we’ve cared for all this time, and will be moving it all into a space where we can work to make it all available to everyone.

Unfortunately, we still have some time before that can happen… and the storage rates have risen considerably. We are forced to move everything into new temporary storage before we can move it all to a more permanent location.

We need your help to make it happen… please make a donation to The Hollywood Sound Museum. We are a 501c3 non-profit, and your donations are tax-deductible.

All donors will have the opportunity to access a few special items from our collection before anyone else. If you have any aspiring soundies in your family, we can provide a special link to some of our webinars to share as a holiday gift!

The Museum PayPal account link is below. If you’d like to donate directly, please message me privately.

Thank you for your support.

Today is “Giving Tuesday,” so please consider making a tax-deductible donation to The Hollywood Sound Museum! We are a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to sharing the craft of creating audio for entertainment.

Donations over $50 will receive a special peak at some of the content we’ve made for our subscribers and an exclusive preview of some of the exciting things we’re planning for 2024.

Thank you! !

On this day in 1938, Orson Welles produced his notorious "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast. Many listeners who tuned in late didn't hear that it was only a dramatization - and genuinely believed that our planet was under attack.

What may be the only existing recording of this historic broadcast was made on a gramophone acetate disc... take a listen!

Howie Mandel, on his audition for vocal effects in "Gremlins" (1984):

"I shared an elevator with a woman who apparently had an appointment with a gynecologist whose office was on the same floor as the sound people for Gremlins. The door opened, and we both heard these awful shrieks and yells from down the hall. I got out and she stayed in. Then I imagine she went down again and found herself another gynecologist."

I just had a lovely conversation with my dear friend Anna on the status of the documentary about that notorious sound effect The Wilhelm Scream. She's been doing an amazing job putting it all together, and I'm thrilled to have been able to help. Although I can't give any details away yet, I can only say that there will be details about its history - including major revelations - that no one has heard before. Its story has not been told as completely and truthfully as it will be in this documentary.

My friends at Twenty Thousand Hertz have dusted off their podcast telling the story of The Wilhelm Scream. Until our documentary comes out next year, it's as close as you're going to get to the true story of that Infamous sound effect.

For more than seventy years now, filmmakers have been using and reusing a particular scream. Without a doubt, this is Hollywood’s most famous sound effect. Many people even know it by name. But despite how widely-known this sound is, lots of people still don’t know its surprising origin story. T...

Hi... Steve here...

I recently was a guest on the podcast A Walk with Walt Podcast talking about the sound for Disney. One of the things I mentioned was the fact that I am completely open talk to almost anyone who has a serious interest in film sound. It's true... I truly feel it's important for us to share our knowledge of the craft.

I just received a really sweet voicemail from an acquaintance of mine who heard the podcast and really liked it, and thanked me for being so accessible to people who want to learn about sound effects history. Very sweet of her to say. I didn't tell her I was going to post about it so I'm not going to reveal her name, but it really made me happy to hear.

I really believe it's important to share what we've learned in our crazy lives... it can make a huge difference to someone. It's one of the reasons I started The Hollywood Sound Museum.

So, thank you, Alyssa and Mindy for having me on your show. I appreciate the opportunity to share the craft with you and anyone else out there.

Keep Listening.

Hey soundies... what films would you recommend to preteens (and up) who are interested in getting into sound design, and would like to hear some of the best examples?

And let's get any franchises like Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park or Matrix or Lord of the Rings out of the way...!
