If you lived in Riverside in the late 50's or anytime in the 60's or 70's you probable have been in Boger-Ball. I think it was the lemonade I remember was so wonderful. Good shakes also.

Milton Langston, Mr. Boger, and Mr. Ball bought Duffy Drug store, (now Captain Ratty's) in the early 50's. The three men parted ways around 1957 and Boger and Ball open a pharmacy in Riverside on the NW corner of National Avenue and Watson. Later Mr. Ball worked at Anderson Drug Store on Broad Street.

I am thinking Boger closed the pharmacy in the mid-late 70's. The last use of the building was a gym owned by a local dentist, Dr. Sam Jackson. I belive the building was torn down in the late 90's or early 2000's.

If these guys look familiar you may have played for the NBHS Bears in the 1970's. If so, say, "I did"I'll start. I did

As we were walking around the outside perimeter of the castle my wife saw a small section (4” square) of the wall that had broken off and fallen to the ground. My wife picked it up and was admiring this ancient piece of cement that had been laid so many years ago, when the grounds keeper said, you can keep it if you like. How cool is that? We now have a small piece of a castle that is almost 1000 years old. Now, for this photo. Look carefully at it.

As we say goodbye to our host and walked to the gate, our guide says “look at the walkway and see if you notice anything”.

Barely noticeable, (blow up photo) unless you are looking for it, is a bear, that many, many year's ago, a Swiss craftsman inlaid into the stone walkway. Just then I remembered when we first met the groundskeeper’s we told them that like Bern Switzerland, the emblem of New Bern is also a Bear.

Anyway, I thought that was so neat. Perhaps our great city needs a tile bear in front of city hall. So;

We said our goodbyes and promised to stay in touch. The end!

We quickly explained that we were from New Bern, a city in America named after Bern, and founded by a man named Degraffenreid, who was born and raised in this castle. Surprisingly they opened the gate and said come in.

They told us that they lived here at the castle and helped take care of the grounds. As we walked into the courtyard they knocked on a huge wooden door and an elderly woman came to the door. She was the owner of the castle. We talked to her for a bit and she said that the castle would be a thousand years old in 2030. She seemed hapy to have guest, even if they were uninvited.

We walked around much of the outside of Worb Castle and from a military point of view it is easy to see why this land was chosen for a castle. It has the high ground advantage from every quadrant.

These are some of the photos we took of the outside of the castle. The first photo is the young caretakers for the castle where Degraffenreid was born, and died.

Christoph Von Degraffenreid, as we all know, is credited in history for the settlement of the city that he named, “New Bern” in honor of Bern Switzerland, the city where he had grown up.

Degraffenreid was born the Worb Castle located just outside Bern in the small farming village of Worb.

My wife and I and a couple of our friends thought it would be cool to ride to Worb and see where Degraffenreid was born. so we hopped on a train for a short trip to Worb.

After exiting the train we found ourselves in a pretty village that seemed almost empty of people. we looked up on the hill and saw what appeared to be an old castle and took off in that direction.

The climb up the hill was quite steep and difficult, but we finally made it to the entrance courtyard entrance that was gated. My wife took this photo and as we were leaving she decided to rattle the gate to see if see could get anyone’s attention.

After a minute a young man and woman came to the gate and said in English;

“This is private property”.

More to come!!

I am going to share a pretty neat story over the next few days. Bear with me, no pun intended.

The story begins with the Mayor of Bern Switzerland inviting my wife, myself and 8 of our friends that we are traveling with, to a dinner party celebrating Swiss Independence Day. There are some 80 embassies in Bern and there were some 30 Ambassadors in attendance. While at the party I presented the Mayor with a gift (see photo) that my wife had purchased at Carolina Creations.

It was a lovely party and before we left I asked the Mayor where Degraffenreid (the founder of New Bern) was buried. More to come tomorrow.

I love this old aerial. It really shows how active the downtown waterfront comerence was back in the day. It's hard for me to date, but I'm guessing late 1940's.

You can see the Trent River bridge, to the left (West) of the RR bridge as it crosses the river at George Street. Notice the cars on it. George Street actualy went through where the Tryon Palace is now. Trent Court is there. The Women's Club is sitting in Union Point Park.

The concrete Neuse River Bridge is not yet built, and the old wooden bridge went down Johnson or King.

Pretty cool photo of some NBHS students in the early 50's. Whats so cool about it is that it's one of the only photos I have found of the old fountain behind the Women's Club. How many of you remember the pond/fountain? I do, but barely.

For those of you not around here in the 50's/60's the Women's Club was built in 1933 and was located in whats now Union Point Park. The members met there for years, and I'm was told by some of the members (now passed) that they did a lot of community service there, including feeding folks that were unemployed during the Great Depression. The fountain was located behind the clubhouse as I recall.

Even in the 20's the New Bern waterfront was a busy place. Here was a commercial shipping line that allowed farmers and merchants to get their product to Norfork and Baltimore. When the Harlow canal was completed in 1827 New Bern became a major shipping port in N.C.

I posted a photo a few weeks ago showing New Bern Shipyard. Long before New Bern Shipyard there was Barbour Boat Works, shown in this photo.

During WW2 they built and repaired ships for the U.S. Navy employing around a thousand employees. Many a skilled craftman worked there from the 30's until the late 90's.

For newcomers Barbour Boat was located where the History Center is now.

Same area as the last photo except around 30 years earlier. New Bern Shipyard was a busy place in the 1960's. I'm sure some of you worked there. Notice the barge with the Navy landing craft on it. The shipyard did a lot of repair work on small Navy craft. Look at all of the landing craft on the boatyard.

The Holiday Inn is in this photo. Seems like I remember it was built around 1962. Does anyone remember the exact year? Also the Holiday Inn sign is visiable if you blow the photo up.

Notice the train boxcar. A RR spur went from Hancock Street to service all the industry on the Trent River, including the boat yard and New Bern Building Supply to the left of it.

My, how the waterfront has changed over the years.

1972 or 73 parade. How many remember Central News and Singer being on Middle street?

Notice the sign on one of the buildings that mentions guest parking for the Governor Tryon Hotel. The Governor Tryon was once a fabulous hotel that burned down in 1965. The Tryon took up most of the SouthWest corner of Middle and South Front Streets

This a pretty cool photo of a lumber company that was located in James City just across the Trent River Bridge.

This photo was taken in 1979 by Joe Hughes. I think they would barge a lot of this lumber to a paper mill in Georgetown S.C.

Anyhow, this operation was closed I'm guessing about 25 years ago. A many load of lumber sailed away from this location. Say heck yea if you remember seeing the barges steaming away.

How many of you remember this sign that sat for many years on the corner of Eight Street and old HWY 17 (now MLK)?

Before the 70 by-pass and I-95 were built old HWY 17 was a very busy road for folks going N-S. Many a snow bird saw the beautiful neon flashing sign pointing them to the Ziegler Motel.

The sign was needed because in the early 1950's HWY 17 was rerouted. Before then it went over the old Neuse River Bridge down Broad Street to Queen Street, and from Queen to Trent Road. So before the early 50's all the HWY 17 traffic went right by the Ziegler. So now you know, the rest of the story.

The sign has been gone for at least 40 years. Do you think it should be replicated and put back?

I snagged this photo at the Jerry West restaurant that is located in the Greenbrier in West Virginia. New Bern's own Walt Bellamy is on this great 1960 Olympic team. Walt was certainly the best basketball player to come from New Bern and one of the best to ever play in the NBA.

My friend and fellow County Commissioner Johnny Sampson played with Walt on the basketball team at JT Barber.

I love debating this guy on controversial local, state, and national issues. You better bring your (A) game when you get in a discussion with him. He will tend to take the opposite view that you have just to debate and challenge you. We enjoy challenging each others depth of knowledge in any number of hot topic issues. He is tough to get the better of in a friendly debate. I guess 60 years of practicing law sharpens your wit. Occasionally I can battle him to a draw.

Anyhow, to my friend Fred Carmichael. I look forward to our next debate over a glass of wine at our favorite meeting place.

There coming to take me away!

Remember that wierd song from the 60's by a group called Napoleon XIV. It's about a girl that drove a man completely mad. Hum!

Anyway, I thought the song fit this photo I took as they were taken the old Ramada/Days Inn away.

I knew something didn't look right in the last photo but I couldn't wrap my arms around it. If you look closely you see ballfield lights. How could that bee? The pgoto was taken from the front of the plane. You should be looking at Trent Road or the New Bern apartments.

One of the comments from Jim Jones pointed out that the origional location of the plane was closer to the ball field and was moved around 1963 to the location most people remember closer to Trent Road with the nose pointing toward the ball field. That what was confusing, I forgot about them moving the plane.

David McFadyen thinks they may have moved it to make way for the bathroom they build around 1964. Anyhow, riddle solved!

Ok, how many really remember the plane when it was at this location? I do.

After searching for 11 years I finally found the Holy Grail of photos. My life is complete!!!!!!!!!

This is the airplane that proudly guarded Fort Totten from around 1960 to around 1980. I remember the day I first laid eyes on it. It must have been 1960, shortly after it was delivered to the park. This photo is dated 11-1961.

Every kid in New Bern was amazed by this beautiful airplane. There would be 40 kids from all over the town climbing on it during the Summer or after school. We would play tag, king of the airplane, army. Yes, there were sharp edges on the plane and yes sometimes kids got hurt. Our parents considered it part of growing up.

This photo was taken by Kathryn Houghton Schreier mom. Thanks Kathryn for sharing this photo.

I am not a plane guy but it looks a little like an F-9 4 Panther. Correct me if I am wrong.
