U–jazdowski Residencies is a curatorial program of artistic residencies run at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art. The participating artists and curators are able to realize artistic projects and experiment in selected fields. We understand residencies as a medium for artistic practices that allow for searching for modes of presentation other than the exhibition. We run city-mapping

and local community-engaging research projects and support the exchange of knowledge. We promote the idea of mobility in Poland and broadly meant Eastern Europe. We work with independent curators, art institutions, galleries, as well as other institutional partners such as schools, NGOs and research institutes at both national and international level. We are a member of international residency networks: Res Artis i ACCR. Current partners who finance and co-organize the residencies at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art:

▪ City of Warsaw
▪ Akademie Schloss Solitude
▪ Adam Mickiewicz Institute
▪ Ramallah City
▪ Morpho
▪ Ukrainian Institute

Shukhliada online gallery, co-managed by our former resident Ivan Svitlyichnyi (2020, 2022), is currently hosting an exhibition of paintings by Lesa Khomenko, our resident from the Crisis Residency program from April of this year. The exhibition features "The Painting from the Photo That Was Taken on the Big Distance and Then Cropped”.

Pieces presented on the exhibition are “a part of a larger project which Khomenko prepared for her solo exhibition in the National Art Museum of Ukraine but had to put on hold after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Working on her series depicting Ukrainian soldiers, the artist relied on the pictures she took from the window of her workshop in Kyiv. There was a military base nearby, and the artist could watch the soldiers from her ‘sniper’ vantage point on the sixth floor. In her exhibition "The Painting From the Photo That Was Taken on the Big Distance and Then Cropped", the artist demonstrates her one-to-one-scale painting that lets the viewer experience the actual scale of the piece, albeit making it impossible to see the work in its entirety on the screen of a personal gadget—be it a smartphone or a PC—which can only show a small fragment of the painting. The exposition enables the viewer to scroll through the picture as if looking at it up close, which is much akin to how the painter approached her work when she used her smartphone’s camera to zoom in on the soldier’s figure, imagining that she was looking through a sniper scope” (from the curatorial text). Lesia Khomenko's works were created i.a. during her residency at the U-jazdowski.

🔹Diary 2023 is now available in our online store → https://u-jazdowski.pl/en/programme/publications/diary-2023

🔹It is a unique pocket calendar and planner published every year by the residencies team at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in collaboration with the institution’s artists-in-residence. Themed “THE GIFT”, this issue was inspired by the informal networks of support and knowledge exchange that have proved so important this year.

🔹 The publication features works by 18 U–jazdowski residents from 2022. Created especially for the Diary, these are drawings, photographs and texts relating to help groups, ecology, practice and idea exchange, and to collaboration that overcomes linguistic and geographical barriers.

🌿Everyday Forms of Resistance🌿 investigates in its broadest sense the role of art within society and the daily use of forms of resistance, in Palestine, as well as worldwide. How do we, as civilians, deal on a daily basis with the challenges of these times? What are the everyday gestures that allow us to resist, but also how does art come into play? The project since its beginning was using everydayness as the meaningful practice. Together with engaged practitioners we are working collectively on topics vibrant for Palestinian context – how can we learn and support each other? The contributions prepared by artists are mostly ephemeral (walking, eating investing in relationships). With our international presence in Palestine we are aiming on bringing back the energy of the project, investing in our temporary community, opening it up for new participants and contributors.

During the gathering on Saturday 27, we are going to continue discussion on Everyday Forms of Resistance and its future manifestations with both international guests and Palestinian art&culture practicioners. The Assembly of artists and cultural workers form Poland, Belgium and Palestine takes place in August 2022 in Ramallah and is already the third chapter of the project after the Warsaw Assembly (2019), an exhibition at U–jazdowski with accompanying events (2021) that aims on reinventing and adapting the project to Palestinian circumstances with aim of rethinking reasons for bringing the exhibition to Ramallah in 2024.

Krystyna Jędrzejewska-Szmek, a visual artist, biologist and researcher based in Warsaw, is currently on a residency in Ramallah, Palestine.

During her residency, she is looking into practices of collective wandering which takes on a political dimension in Palestine. Hikes become an expression of resistance against the Israeli occupation and a way of manifesting independence. Organizing joint trips is not only a way to cope with the threat. Equally important is the aspect of being together, learning and reclaiming the disappearing landscape of Palestine. The hikes involve not only walking but also eating together, singing and bathing, they become a kind of a communal ritual.

Her residency is part of "Everyday Forms of Resistance" project supported by the City of Ramallah / Ramallah Municipality - بلدية رام الله
