“These new paintings are a continuation of my personal interpretation of traditions associated with forms of Western painting and antique African sculpture as canonized throughout history. In this current body of work too, the preoccupation persists on my implication of the role of both ethnology and the wider anthropological gaze on Africa, and their bestowed fraught contemporary relations between cultures of the West and Africa, signified by and large through the capture of African cultural art objects by Western museums, and the ensuing resistance against repatriation of said objects.”_Phoka Nyokong

As our exhibition FOREWOMEN draws to a close, we turn the spotlight on Lerato Nkosi, a talented Johannesburg-based artist whose work intricately explores the complexities of womanhood. Nkosi’s art delves into the conscious and unconscious mind, examining how societal expectations shape women’s self-perception.
Fascinated by reflection as a metaphor for the unconscious, Nkosi highlights the tension between the image presented to the world and the inner self. Her work unveils how this dynamic shapes a woman’s identity, revealing the profound impact of societal norms on the psyche.

2023 kickstarted our collaboration with @saicps on a postgraduate residency program. Samara Huggins was the first recipient of this prestigious opportunity. During her residency, Samara shared insights into her practice and what it means to her, as well as the social impact it has on her and her community. A special thanks to The School of Art Institute of Chicago for yet another wonderful exchange of ideas and inspirational artists. Visit our website or click the link in our bio to watch her interview.
-
Samara Huggins' work explores how language interacts and relates with the body. She examines how we read, don't read, and misunderstand language, as well as how we fragment, multiply, and exhaust stories. Samara encloses texts in hidden or secret parts of homemade quilts, tapestries, and garments made from fabric objects donated by the women in her family. She and her family create stories about ancestors, the environment, grief, and healing through weaving, knitting, embroidery, dyeing, and stitching.
