Many of the pieces in John Tobin's exhibition at our Offsite Gallery, begin as blind contour drawings. He often references political figures and faces. This video features one in a series of drawings of dirt bikes and antique bicycles he has collected over the years. Tobin writes, “Blind contour drawings are used as a technique to improve drawing skills. This idea was developed by Betty Edwards. In her book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" Edward's shares how students can improve their ability to draw by using this method. To "see" an object, the artist is instructed to draw without looking at their paper. Distortions are often the result. If you lose your spot, you may stop and return your pen to the correct location and begin again.” On view through 03/14/25 every day. On view through 01/05/25 “Afrotricity, Color Rapping", a solo exhibition by Clyde Santana at our Offsite Gallery at MacArthur Center. The featured triptych was inspired by Santana's wife, Dr. Valli Meeks, Director of the University of MD School of Dentistry's PLUS Clinic, Maryland's first dental clinic for individuals with HIV and AIDS, + her work partnering with Harvard to establish the first dental school in Rwanda. Santana's mentor was his professor while at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Nelson Stevens. As an early member of the Chicago based, AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) collective formed in 1968, Stevens gave way to a new movement which he referred to as Afro Kinetic Expressionism. Santana's style is heavily influenced by Stevens' process which he dubbed 'color rapping’. Clyde Santana and Nelson Stevens co-created "The Wall of Black Music" mural in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1974. In 2022, Santana, together with the Community Mural Institute and residents, re-created their mural + over 30 other murals originally painted by Stevens and his students as a tribute to Mr. Stevens who passed in 2022. Pictured is Santana and Stevens in front of their mural in 1974 and Santana at the 2022 dedication of the re-created murals. For inquiries, email: [email protected]. Tune in to WHRO’s Curate in early 2025 to see a special segment featuring Santana. #ShareNorfolkArt
⭐️What a great time we had last Friday night at the opening of Clyde Santana's solo exhibition "Afrotricity, Color Rapping"! Thank you to everyone who was able to join us. Clyde Santana graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science, Art in Urban Life/Arts Education and received a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He was inspired to create his Afrotricity series by his mentor and professor at #umass, Nelson Stevens. “During my period of living in Springfield and Amherst, MA from 1969-1976, I was involved in designing/painting and designing/co-painting 11 murals as a student at Springfield College from 1971-1973 and at #umassamherst from 1973-1976. From 2017-2021, when I taught a mural course (ASP 491) at Norfolk State University, I was responsible for 14 mural projects in #norfolkva, designed and painted by my students at NSU. During that time, I would call Nelson and put him on speaker phone so the students could hear him speak about our relationship as muralists and encourage them to work on their art. It was very rewarding to me to be able to provide a lineage to Nelson to my students. He is missed. The mural program ended in 2022 at NSU but the spirit of the course and Nelson lives on." Clyde thanks God and all those who have supported him for the opportunities he has been given to create and display his work.
