Merry Christmas Eve and thank you to everyone who came in to buy art, see a concert, rent our space, practice yoga, buy root beer and candy and in general be present to celebrate with us in this first six months of business on Stowe Street! We’re pleased as punch to be breaking even and look forward to more growth in 2024. We love you and we’ll be closed starting today while we prep and install our next three month gallery show, WARP & WEFT, opening Friday, January 5th with the Cleary/Gagnon/Saulnier jazz trio performing. Free to the public, see you in the New Year!

TONIGHT!

Friend of The Phoenix, 19 year old Huntington, Vt poet Rowan Riggs will be in conversation with Chris Martin, author of “May Tomorrow Be Awake: On Poetry, Autism and Our Neurodivergent Future,” and soon to be publisher of Rowan’s debut poetry collection. Follow the link in bio to register for a zoom link to listen in on this compelling dialogue between poet and publisher, hosted by the wonderful folks at Vermont Studio Center! This event is free and will send lightning bolts through your Monday evening, we promise.

Rowan is non-speaking (but very verbal) autistic and has been writing poetry from an astonishingly early age. His poetry and friendship, together with his parents, Mariah and Josh Riggs, has buoyed and inspired The Phoenix’s owners, Joseph Pensak and Anna Black, through peaks and valleys of our lives and we are so excited to see this collaboration happen. Rowan, through his typepad, was a guest vocalist on Joseph’s last album, called Hallowell (“Do Not Pass Me By,” on Hallowell’s self titled record—find it on all the streaming services).

EVENT DETAILS:

Her goal for class is for you to connect movement with breath and feel good in your body. Her Vinyasa style flow class will provide opportunities for you to build strength and stability, listen to your body, and calm your mind. Holidae believes yoga is also a tool for creating community & hopes class is not only a time for you to move and connect with your own body and mind, but find and build connection within our community. When Holidae is not in the studio, you can find her playing in her garden or biking and skiing up mountains with her husband and toddler.

Our 1st annual

HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY
+ PING PONG TOURNAMENT

Friday, October 27th
$10 cover
6pm-1am

Our new to us JBL Club PA system will be bumpin tunes curated by DJ Felt of UVM’s WRUV 90.1 until 1am.

Not one but TWO mirror balls will be liberally distributing round-robin-radness in the form of LIGHT.

Beer + wine for purchase from Vermont Craft.
Your bartenders will be Phoenix owners Joseph Pensak and Anna Black, who we’ll go ahead and tell you will be coming as Ken and Weird Barbie. Owners are excluded from winning costume contest, we’re just giving you assurance that costumes WILL be happening (you CAN come without a costume and we’ll still party with you).

$2 of every cover will go in the pot for the winner of the Costume Contest (announced at 11pm) and the Ping Pong Tournament

Register in person (from 6-7:30) or at the link in bio for the Ping Pong Tournament. Bracket will be seeded based on skill level (you’ll fill out a google sheet and tell us if you’re Beginner, Intermediate, Pretty Damn Good, Baller or Jedi) and all games will be to 11 points until the final, which will be the traditional 21 pts.

Parents: your kids are welcome to party with us from 6-8:45pm, must be 13 years old to enter tournament.

Winners of Best Costume judged by an esteemed panel of fashion mavens who know their stuff. The winner of the Ping Pong Tournament will earn their own VICTORY.

Please love yourself by making a plan to get home (walking is ideal if you live in the village) or make sure you have a designated driver. Be courteous to your fellow party goers/Ping Pong players—throwing paddles, abusive language, etc will not be tolerated and will result in your prompt ejection from The Phoenix. Ultimately what matters is not who wins but that Taylor Swift’s ERAS tour is now viewable on local movie screens (we got our tix to Stowe Cinema for this weekend). So let’s keep our tournament in perspective.

I’ve showed a lot of restraint in waiting to post this, one of my fav online things I’ve found (lmk if you know the source or artist so I can credit them). It’s just TOO GOOD. Have a great fall ya’ll. And come to one of our events this weekend!

Tomorrow night, Friday the 22nd is the next in our PHOENIX TALKS series with author Ray Padgett, whose book “Pledging My Time: Conversations with Bob Dylan Bandmembers” has received rave reviews from luminaries like Greil Marcus and others. I’ll be interviewing Ray, we’ll have an audience Q & A time and then a 45 minute set of Dylan tunes by Sean Hood of Eastern Mountain Time. 7pm, $10 for the music and talk, $35 for everything plus a signed copy of the book!

And then Saturday the 23rd TURNmusic and Greg Davis are hosting a jazz show by Ras Moshe Trio and Toussaint St. Negritude. 7pm doors, 7:30pm music, $10 sugg donation.

REVIEWS AND MORE INFO ABOUT THE BOOK

"More fine stories than you can count" — Greil Marcus

Collecting over 40 original, in-depth interviews, Pledging My Time: Conversations with Bob Dylan Band Members is the first look at Bob Dylan’s career entirely from the perspective of the musicians standing a few feet away from him on stage – from his earliest days in the ‘60s all the way through the 21st century Never Ending Tour. With a few exceptions, these artists are not household names, but they have in many cases spent years making music with one of the most revered and mysterious artists in the world.

The world of Dylan’s bands and his road life has seemed fairly impenetrable for decades now. Many people in this book have never spoken before about their time with Dylan, or certainly not in as much depth. Interviewees span every era of Dylan’s career, from Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Martin Carthy talking about the early folk scene up through Benmont Tench and Alan Pasqua talking about recording Rough and Rowdy Ways. This guest list guiding the backstage tour also includes one-off sit-ins, behind- the-scenes touring personnel, and even a notable Grammy Awards stage-crasher.

If Dylan is, as he famously put it back in 1965, a “song and dance man,” these are the people who have sung and danced alongside him.

PRAISE FOR PLEDGING MY TIME:

Ray Padgett is the ideal interviewer—he really knows his stuff, so he can draw the best out of every musician he talks to. This is a tremendous collection of acute, revealing, often funny stories from those who’ve played on stage with Bob Dylan.

— Michael Gray, author of Song and Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan

PRAISE FOR PLEDGING MY TIME:

These talks open up like running streams. There seems to be no guile, no self-promotion, no agendas: maybe because Ray Padgett doesn’t either. There’s less I Was There than ‘and then I wasn’t’—and more fine stories than you can count. I love Louis Kemp on negotiating with Walter Yetnikoff—even if he does have a 13-year-old Bob Dylan singing Jerry Lee Lewis and Chubby Checker in 1954.
