#1 on my list, Käthe Kollwitz, a tremendous, powerful from . Käthe was a pacifist and champion of the poor and working classes. She dedicated her life to making art that challenged 20th C. society to change its imperialist ways. This work here is a self-portrait. Even in profile you can feel her defiance and anger, but also this awful weight of sadness and a calm acceptance and even power that comes with grief. WWI took one of her sons, and WWII took her only grandson. She fought to the last to make her voice heard, even standing up to the Gestapo.

This post marks the completion of my art history blog. There are still more interviews to come, so I'll be posting updates until that's finished. For now though, I really need to get back to my own art. There's a wedding on Saturday and I need to finish a painting.

Click this link to see more of Käthe Kollwitz's art and to learn all about her life - it's a sad one, but so impressive. And, I hope you've enjoyed these posts:

#2 on my list, Alyssa Monks, an unbelievably great from . This artist blurs the line between and in ways that defy physics, logic. They'll blow your mind. The work here is titled 'Become'. It's hard to imagine how any artist could top this, and there really isn't. I'll get to my #1 pick in time, and I have my reasons, but so far as technical ability and creativity, Alyssa Monks wins. Hands down. You can follow Alyssa here on Facebook at:

#12 on my list, Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, a & from . She was a Neo-Pre-Raphaelite, who illustrated scenes from Shakespeare and the poems of Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning. She also illustrated her own book of famous women in history. This illustration tells of the lady Catherine Douglas, seen here trying to save her king, James I of Scotland. Conspirators had removed the wooden bars from the door so that assassins could enter. Catherine put her arm through the bars, trying to stop them. They broke her arm when they broke down the door, and then killed the king. She was known from then on as Catherine Barlass. To learn more about Eleanor and her art, click the link:
