A description of the Parishes of Kilchreest and Killinane (Killynan). These descriptions are taken from the first full Survey and Mapping of Ireland which took place between 1824 and 1842. Many of the Taylor’s lived in Kilchreest and are buried in Killinane

This day 110 years ago, Isabel Vera Taylor was baptised. She was the daughter of Benjamin Taylor and Ethel Bradshaw. Isabel was the granddaughter of Rev. Robert Bradshaw.

An interesting thing that I have came across about baptisms in the late 1800s and early 1900s, particularly in Galway, is that a child born unwell and not expected to survive would often be baptised privately. This was usually done as soon as possible after the birth. If the baby happened to pull through and survive, a public baptism would be had at a later date.

This occurred in a couple of family members from my tree!

This day 107 years ago my great grand uncle, Thomas Stanley Taylor, passed away. Thomas Stanley passed away just shy of 10 years old. It is believed he used to eat the grout out of stone walls. This would have caused complications. There is a mug still around that is believed to be from his christening.

Something that is very interesting about my tree is the diverse trades throughout the different families. Here are some examples.
Michael Brazill my paternal 3x great grandfather was a shoemaker from Kilfinane,as you can see on his marriage cert. I don’t not know yet where his workshop was or if his trade was carried on.
In the second image we see the birth record of my great grand aunt, Margaret McCarthy. Her father was a railway milesman, as were many of the McCarthys. A milesman was assigned one stretch of the railway to maintain.
In the last image we see the birth cert of my 2x great grand uncle, William Madden. His father William was a blacksmith . This trade was carried down through the Madeen family.
