Women's History Month:

Empress Matilda (1102-1167)

The eldest of Henry I two legitimate children. When she was seven she was seven Henry arranged her marriage to King Heinrich V of Germany. In 1110 she left Henry's court for Germany where she continued her education at the German court. She married the newly crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1114. Although she was unable to provide an heir for the Emperor she proved herself a strong and reliable Queen often running the Kingdom in her husband's absence. When Heinrich died in 1125 he entrusted with the Imperial Insignia until her nephew came of age. However in an age where government was seen as a role for a man she was forced to hand over the role to another relative.

Having lost her position in Germany, and despite numerous proposals for marriage in Germany, Matilda returned to her father's side in England. five years earlier her bother William had died in a maritime disaster and as a result of failing to produce another son Henry was preparing Matilda for heir.

Henry spent the rest of his life persuading the barons to recognise her as heir among those to swear homage to her was her cousin Stephen of Blois, who as a grandson of William the Conqueror had a claim himself. After receiving the oaths she left England to marry a minor french noble Geoffrey Plantagenet with whom she produced her first son Henry in 1133. When her father died on 1st December 1135 she was in Anjou, her rival Stephen was in his wife's lands of Boulogne. He immediately sailed for London where he claimed the throne and was crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey on the 22 December.

The usurpation of her throne kicked off a near 20 year civil war. Matilda and Geoffrey made their first moves in Normandy from Geoffrey's powerbase in Anjou before Matilda set her sights on England. The claimants steered each other out from the respective power bases but following Stephen's defeat and capture at the battle of Lincoln Matilda made a deal with Stephen's brother Henry, Bishop of Wi******er, and she took the title of Lady of England.

When Matilda's force was besiged at Oxford the science was set for one of the most dramatic escapes of the middle ages. With a small guard she slipped out of the postern gate and walked across the frozen Thames. They crossed the snow covered fields in white cloacks to reach the village of Abingdon and from there by horse to her stronghold at Wallingford. From 1142 she recognised her struggle was now to protect Henry's inheritance.

Henry would eventually lead an army to England and force Stephen into recognising him as heir and unleashing a new and powerful dynasty into English History.

Matilda lived out her retirement as the King's Mother in Normandy. She died 10 September 1167. Matilda, Queen of England in all but name, Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, daughter of Henry I, Granddaughter of William the Conqueror, mother of the Plantagenet dynasty.
