L'exposition "Paradigm and Disruption: The Creative Pulse of the 80's" capture la fièvre électrique et l'audace radicale de la scène artistique new-yorkaise de cette décennie tumultueuse. Dans un New York contrasté, où le béton froid côtoie des explosions de couleurs et d'idées, des jeunes artistes tracent les lignes avant-gardistes d'un renouveau artistique. Leur fougue insatiable, palpable à travers chaque œuvre, défie les conventions et reflète un monde en pleine mutation. The exhibition “Paradigm and Disruption: The Creative Pulse of the 80's” captures the electric fever and radical audacity of the New York art scene during this tumultuous decade. In a New York of contrasts, where cold concrete rubbed shoulders with explosions of color and ideas, young artists drew the avant-garde lines of an artistic revival. Their insatiable enthusiasm, palpable in every work, defies convention and reflects a world in the throes of change. This exhibition is not just a journey into the past, but an immersion in the raw, disruptive energy of a visionary youth, driven by the quest for unfettered art.

KAWS Curates Over 350 Drawings From Personal Collection in 'The Way I See It'. Works from Picasso, Martin Wong, Hilma af Klint, de Kooning among other recognizable names : Dondi White, Rammellzee, Phase2, Futura 2000, Crash, Daze, Lee Quinones, Martin Wong, David Wojnarowicz, Peter Saul, Ed Rusha, Chaz Bojorquez, Georges Condo, ...

For KAWS, this collection functions as a personal reference library—a way to study the progression of an artist’s style, to think abstractly about the marks of a drawing, and to remind himself that there’s more than one way of making art. Living with other artists’ work is “energy, food,” KAWS has said, highlighting the profound impact these works have on his own artistic practice and vision.

The Way I See It: Selections from the KAWS Collection features more than 350 artworks chosen by KAWS from his vast personal collection of over 3,000 works on paper by some 500 artists. The Way I See It continues The Drawing Center’s tradition of exhibiting drawings from outstanding public and private collections, and offers an unprecedented glimpse into the artistic inspirations and interests of one of today’s most popular contemporary artists.

Hunter Museum of American art > exhibition "City as Canvas" : Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection. On View September 20, 2024 - January 13, 2025

"When Martin Wong (1946-1999) began collecting art in the 1970s, graffiti was still considered an illicit and underground movement. While working at Pearl Paint, an art supply store on Canal Street in Manhattan, he befriended New York City graffiti writers, many of whom were just teenagers, and began acquiring their work through purchase or trade. During this time Wong also pursued his own career as a painter. While Wong himself painted in a realist/representational style, he recognized the artistic ability of up-and-coming graffiti writers. City as Canvas includes many of the earliest surviving examples of graffiti art by writers who went on to have important careers in the arts, fashion, and music industries. Several works in this pioneering exhibition refer back to original pieces that were spray-painted on buildings or subways before being destroyed." Hunter Museum
