“Acclimate” is part of my current show , exhibiting through October 2nd. Originally it came about merely because I liked how the aloe flowers could act as cool head feathers on this red-crowned parrot, a species that I hear and see in my neighborhood almost every single day. But as I worked on it it started to reveal more of me and has become a reflection on this past year.
As you know, I’m a dad now and the first few months were so hard. I was sleep deprived and physically drained for months, I felt like I was hardly staying afloat, drowning at times. But eventually things got easier while I also got used to it. And now I feel like I live in a new world, one that’s similar to before but also very different. And I get to show my little one the world! It’s a trip seeing him experience things for the first time. Things that are so commonplace to me are the most exciting thing to him.
“Acclimate” is a personal piece for me but one that I hope you can find yourself in as well. It’s about adjusting to a new normal and finding a new groove. I’m retrospect, the struggle made it all the more sweet.
