Twenty years ago... While in Afghanistan we made it a point to celebrate, as best we could, our unit members’ birthdays. We were there for a full year, so we got a chance to celebrate all of us.
These pictures are of SFC Easter, birthday June 12, me June 13 and my soldiers, American, Turks, French and Romanians, celebrating our birthdays. Our commander, Lieutenant Colonel Randy Scott even made home made ice cream. This was a good day.

Licata - The 3rd Ranger Battalion and the 16th Infantry Regiment stormed the beaches at Licata.
There is an Italian memorial to the Allies for the invasion of Sicily during Operation Husky, July 10, 1943.
Sand collected from the beach will be displayed at our Chicagoland Combined Veterans Museum.

Gela - During the initial assault on 9 July 1943 of the Allied invasion of Sicily , the U.S. 1st Infantry Division and the 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion landed on the beaches of Gela, which were strongly defended by the Livorno Division. Sand collected from the beach will be displayed at our Chicagoland Combined Veterans Museum.

Operation Husky was the invasion of Sicily by the Allies during World War Two. General Patton’s forces fought for and secured beach heads at Licata and Gela. The initial assault occurred on 9 July 1943, this year marks 80 years. (coincidentally July 9 is my son’s birthday).
To my fellow US service members I say “Grazie per la liberta!”
To those who died to free my oppressed island, it is a debt that can never be repaid but will always to be remembered!!
Gela is two and a half hours from our home in Casteldaccia, in the next two posts I will highlight the two separate beach landings. While at each beach head I collected sand from both, which will be displayed at our Chicagoland Combined Veterans Museum.
