25 July 1944- Operation Cobra, the American breakout from Normandy, begins with an attack by the US 1st Army against the German 7th Army. With most German panzers pinned down by the British, the Americans, spearheaded by four armoured divisions, make large advances. The already depleted German tank forces opposing them shatter at the beginning of the attack, and by August the Americans have broken free from the Bocage to secure Brittany and threaten the Germans with encirclement at Falaise. What the Cromwell lacked in firepower it made up for in speed. Featuring the 600hp Rolls-Royce Meteor V12, it was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 40mph (64km/h). It was this speed that allowed for the largest armoured breakout in military history: the ‘Great Swan’. This saw the British 21st Army Group cover 350 miles in four days, a feat made possible by the speed of this tank, unmatched by its Axis and Allied counterparts.
