"As the child of a lower middle-class family in Mississippi, crayons, markers, and color pencils were an inexpensive way to keep me entertained. My childhood love of color application followed me into adulthood, and coloring books were a standard item of my household." -Lane Dalton lanedalton.com

"The resurfacing series began when I graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2005. When I finished school, I had a large body of painting work. The main problem was they lacked any real cohesion. Most of the paintings were school assignments and exercises. I didnโt like them, but there was all this embedded history that I wanted to retain in some way. It seemed a bit drastic and wasteful to throw them away. Challenging myself to find a way to unite them, I brought them back into the studio to take another look." -Frank May frankmay.net

"When I was a girl in Mississippi, clay was a childhood friend. It was always available and easily accessible, literally under my feet. It seems almost magical that 40 years later, and over one thousand miles from our last meeting, clay and I would find one another again. Reunited, these are the first fruits of our collaboration." -Lane Dalton

"There have been countless artworks about 'darkness.' The visual paradox is that all have been made using light. This series of paintings is an experiment in using 'dark' as material and subject matter. The question I am asking is, 'What does paint do in the dark?'" -Frank May

"The resurfacing series began when I graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2005. When I finished school, I had a large body of painting work. The main problem was they lacked any real cohesion. Most of the paintings were just school assignments and exercises. I didnโt like them, but there was all this embedded history that I wanted to retain in some way. It seemed a bit drastic and wasteful to throw them away. To correct this, I challenged myself to find a way to unite them. I brought them back into the studio to take another look. My concept was to begin to highlight the parts of the painting I thought were interesting or stood out. I did that by literally outlining those parts with paint. Then I would outline that outline and so on, until the surface was covered. This process resulted in an elegant paradox. The new painting was 'about' the old painting, but it also had been 'erased.' This was exciting for me, because I found my solution. Since then, I have expanded the concept to other artists. Now, I invite other painters to donate their 'throw-away' surfaces to be 'resurfaced.'" -Frank May

"Sheets are sold and traded amongst tattoo artists and the counter culture at large. Tattoos aside, flash is an art form in and of itself. There is a certain way to design a tattoo so that it will age well; thick black outlines, around forty percent black shading, allowing space in the design and a simplifying of more detailed images. With these principles in mind, the only limit is my imagination." -James Post
