Ric Mixter's Wrecknology Learning more about Great Lakes Shipwrecks and Survivals

26/12/2024

It is time to RSVP your spot for the SECOND SATURDAY: RIC MIXTER "HOWLING WINDS" on January 11, 1 PM.

Mascots were fairly common on Great Lakes ships, and the animal of choice was a dog. Ric Mixter chronicles some of the most famous storms and the canines that made it through, including the LC Waldo’s bulldog in the 1913 Storm, and the pets of the captain and cook that rode 20 miles in a lifeboat with gold medal lifesavers from Charlotte, New York. Soogie, the Coast Guard dog, rode through the same storm that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald! The recent discovery of the Huronton also brings to the surface the legend of the ship’s dog by a man who survived over a dozen shipwrecks.

Registration is required. Space is limited.

Register by calling (989)893-5733 or online https://forms.gle/DLzL5mEcBiVY9BLB8

It’s nine degrees and the frozen silence of Point Betsie is a testament to the enduring power and artistry of the natural world. There is a beauty born of harshness; a peace-filled tranquility carved from the very heart of winter. It's a moment of fragile perfection, captured forever through my lens. The snow, a whirling dancer of feather-light flakes, pirouettes and waltzes in the wind. The ice builds with effortless grace, a sculptor of silent beauty. It weaves delicate forms, each one a prism capturing the light like a thousand tiny diamonds. Point Betsie Lighthouse, a sentinel of the Lake Michigan coast, stands shrouded in a silent and beautiful embrace of ice. I listen as the wind gently whispers and shares with me the secrets of Lake Michigan.

Santa brought me an early present! Brendon Baillod's new book is so packed with shipwreck info that I'll need to raise my book shelf up a notch. Great stuff and highly recommended.

The history of the crucifix in Petoskey😃 In case you missed the conversation, we WILL be hosting a shore dive there next summer🤩

The crucifix was originally commissioned in the 1950s by the parents of Gerald Schipinski, a 15-year-old boy who was accidentally killed by a shotgun on their family's farm. The cross was crafted in Italy but was broken during shipping and rejected by the family.

In 1962, the Superior Marine Divers Club of Wyandotte purchased the crucifix and installed it in Little Traverse Bay to honor divers who had drowned. The crucifix was placed 1,200 feet from the Petoskey break wall.

In 1985, the Little Traverse Bay Dive Club moved the crucifix to its current location due to heavy sediment.

The crucifix commemorates all those who have died at sea. There are also plaques at the site that memorialize people who have died.
