An amazing donation arrived from the city of Lviv, Ukraine to The Pysanka: A Symbol Of Hope at the Ukrainian Institute of America. During online workshops the concept of the Installation was explained to the participants: children whose parents are fighting at the front lines, children whose parents died defending their homeland, students form Kharkiv Universities temporarily studying in Lviv and soldiers receiving medical treatment in Lviv hospitals. We are extremely moved and thank all the Ukrainian participants who added to the power of our Installation while in the midst of war and destruction. Дуже дякуємо! Dziękuję bardzo!!! It was an honor and privilege to acquaint Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Małgorzata Gosiewska,with "The Pysanka: A Symbol Of Hope" installation. After the tour the Deputy Speaker add to the power of the exhibit by placing a pysanka among the more than 600 eggs already in the installation.

How many people does it take to create one pysanka? In this story the answer is 4.
I first met Emma, a British citizen doing post graduate work, when I was speaking about pysanky at Columbia University. She then came to my workshop at the Ukrainian Institute of America with her French husband Charly. Charly then flew to Oxford, England, and met up with Bohdana, a Ukrainian refugee who had never written a pysanka before. Under Charly's guidance and newly acquired knowledge Bohdana created a pysanka of her own. She then gave it to Charly who flew back to New York and gave it to Emma who gave it to me and I placed it into The Pysanka: A Symbol Of Hope installation.
Together, we are strong!!!

On behalf of the Foreign Minister of Guatemala, H. E. Mario Búcaro Flores, "The Pysanka of Hope" received a special gift from the children of Guatemala- cascarones. The permanent representative of Guatemala to the United Nations, H. E. Carla Maria Redriguea Maneira, placed more than 50 of these colorful traditional Guatemalan eggs into the installation thus adding more power to the project. MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!

It was my pleasure to lead a pysanka workshop at the Ukrainian Institute of Americafor Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at The Frick Collection in New York and his colleagues. After creating their pysanky each participant placed their egg in the installation thus contributing to the primeval power of the exhibit.

On May 24th, 2022 the Ukrainian Institute of America hosted a pysanka workshop for members of The European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC). After creating pysanky with traditional motifs each student placed their egg in "The Pysanka:A Symbol of Hope" installation thus contributing to the powerful energy to the exposition.
We get many beautiful notes that accompany the pysanky donated to "The Pysanka:A Symbol Of Hope" Installation. Many contain family histories, childhood memories, prayers or hope for peace. But this one from 12 year old Nina K stole my heart. Дякую Ніно, we also believe that "все буде добре".

Meet Pat. He traveled many miles through different states to attend the pysanka workshop at the Music and Arts Center of Greene Co. His beautiful egg will be a wonderful addition to "The Pysanka:A Symbol of Hope" installation at the Ukrainian Institute of America. Congratulations to the Music and Arts Center of Greene County on celebrating its 40th season!!! Along with the wonderful classical music concerts, the Center also conducts Ukrainian folk art workshops. It has been my privilege to lead many such classes throughout these years. This summer’s pysanka workshop (August 1,2,3) will be a bit different: one of the pysanky created by the students will become an integral part of the art installation “The Pysanka: A Symbol Of Hope” at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York City. This collaborative, constantly changing exhibit is our ancestral response to what is happening in Ukraine right now. Ukrainian people have been using folk art, music, and traditions to resist the war and foster hope.
It was my privilege to know pan Zenon Elyjiw, the “encyclopedia of pysanka knowledge” and the author of one of the best books on this subject- Sixty Score of Easter Eggs. We spent many hours discussing the who, what, where and when of the pysanka tradition. So it was a double honor to receive two pysanky from pan Elyjiw’s daughter. Not only were these eggs created by pan
Elyjiw and his brother many years ago but they were also the daughter’s prized possessions. Thank you Marta Brewer, these fragile, delicate objects will be added to “The Pysanka:A Symbol Of Hope” installation and will travel to Ukraine to help with the rebirth of the Nation.
