BANANAS HAMOA (2024)
Artist: Nikki Mariner
Acrylic on unstretched canvas
182cmx126cm

She saw my paintings exhibited in Hawaii (NO WOMAN IS AN ISLAND Series) and reached out from Tahiti to commission this piece.

She liked the original one I did titled Misiluki/Lady Fingers based on the bananas: fruit/leaves/trees,
however she wanted it horizontal rather than vertical like I usually do.

Hamoa is a Tahitian word for bananas so I chose it for the title.🍌🍌🍌

Thank you 🧡

TWO SISTERS AND THE EEL (2024)
Artist: Nikki Mariner
Acrylic on stretched canvas
402x106cm

Commissioned by
Restaurant as part of their recent renovation.

Giovanni and I decided an underwater scene would be appropriate for a venue on the ocean. He also wanted lots of bright colours.

I then thought of Klimt's paintings of serpents. And that's where it started.
I wanted to allude to Samoan legends about sisters and eels but very indirectly.

In the end I was painting it as a window to a magical aquarium. It is 4 metres long so the longest painting I've done.

I really appreciated the trust Giovanni put in my ability to create atmosphere and magic in this wonderful restaurant. I love the photos of people dining around this painting. It glows.

TIKTOK TEINE (2024)
Artist: Nikki Mariner
Acrylic on unstretched canvas
87x75cm

From the artist:

"This is unlike most of my work.

It began as a side piece to help me through some serious commissions and I needed a playful smaller piece of canvas to paint without pressure.

Then it became a study of colour. It's so bright and intense. Orange, red, yellow and green essentially.

I saw a photo of five girls doing a tiktok dance and I liked the composition of three in front and two behind, who were partially obscured. So that was where it started.

It is a playful addition to my paintings featuring five women dancing.
It speaks to the freedom and fun that girls have dancing together on tiktok.
Tiktok is not my thing, but I definitely love seeing women have fun together when they're not taking themselves too seriously and just having a laugh."

That's what this is about.
It's available now, and it can be collected in Hawaii if needed, or shipped internationally, or collected from in Samoa.

THE CLEANER (2024)
167x 102cm
Acrylic on unstretched canvas

The first painting of every year is significant.
It sets the tone, mood, style, and benchmark for the year.

The Cleaner is my first for 2024 and I painted it in Australia, visiting my family for the first time since 2019.

It's a figurative painting of a woman with a broom.
She wears only a lavalava and a sei.

Inspirations.

1. I fell in love with a sculpture by Italian artist Ernesto Coter while eating in his kitchen at Santa Maria Rezzonico a few weeks earlier. The sculpture was sitting on the sideboard beside his dining table. He said it is a Samoan woman dancing. This painting is a response to the sculpture (Pic 5)

2. A new year inspires a fresh look at life, reassessment, and decluttering. It's not the first time my first painting for a new year has included a broom. It's about spring cleaning your life as a new year begins.

3. Spending time with my family gave me a fresh respect for two of my sisters who each successfully run their own cleaning businesses in Queensland. It's more interesting and complex work than I expected, and what they do for their clients is admirable.
I wanted to honour cleaners so I painted gold behind her head to show she is iconic.
And she had a gold broom.

4. Samoans sweep everything regularly - the beach, the grass the house, and everything.

5. A woman with a broom is a timeless and common sight in the background of every culture and every age. I want to uplift and highlight this symbol.
As a goddess. With an iconic halo.
We have often been this person and often see this person. And they're important and essential.
They get rid of crap and they make the world more beautiful.
Goddesses.

6. I painted a blue ocean type background because I was seeing a lot from the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, while painting. Many people I know were there representing island nations of the Pacific Ocean.

THE STORY BEHIND A PAINTING
Nikki Mariner

I was finally reunited with my sisters a few weeks ago.

After years apart, lonely and hard years in lockdown, we gathered together in the Gold Coast on 1st January.

I started painting them because I missed them when I moved to Samoa to live.
So what did I do?
I painted five women in a row over and over again.

So we planned a get-together without the kids or mandem or anyone else. Just us.
We each bought something to eat and something to drink.
We sat around in the loungeroom and talked and laughed for hours.
We talked about our love lives, our kids, our work and businesses, our exes, parents, travels, dreams, painful things, and funny things. Banter and advice, old jokes and new, and all the good stuff.

At one point, I looked across the room and snapped a photo of their legs.

This is the photo that inspired this painting.

When I got home that around midnight, tipsy and happy, I felt solid again.
I remembered where I come from and who I am.
Things I'd almost forgotten.

I felt ready to face a new year.

And I started painting this piece.

The title came after hearing my husband describing his recent meeting up with his cousins. Catching up on each others lives and talking family things and drinking and laughing.

We were both having Annual General Meetings with our day one crews. And I figured many people are doing exactly this around the world at Christmas and New years.

Proudly introducing again, the gang of women I grew up with and will grow old with: my sisters Sarah, Rebecca, Jessica, and Hannah. The inspiration for this painting.

BRAINY TEINE (2023)
Artist: Nikki Mariner
Acrylic on unstretched canvas
133x183cm

One for the readers, booklovers, researchers, academics, collectors, thinkers, writers, students, poets, and library lovers.
And plant lovers.

And those with wild hair and brown curves.

Thinking women with hungry minds.

Lead, teach, and inspire with your juicy brains, curated words, brave ideas, and deep thoughts.

This is a theme I love returning to.
Women and their books.
I've done this painting in so many variations.

This is the biggest one and had to be in my Tall Series, a series of large paintings revisiting my favourite themes and most popular paintings.

Thanks for providing two great solutions both times I was indecisive and stuck while painting this.

MANGO FANDANGO (2023)
Artist: Nikki Mariner
Acrylic on unstretched canvas
120x183cm

🥭🍃🥭🍃🥭🍃🥭🍃🥭🍃🥭

Here is my new fruity 6ft painting (following Lady Fingers).

It's similar in size and colour palette, but it has a different feel.
It's mangoes vs. bananas.

INSPIRATION
Mangoes are always special.
Fancy. Soft. Sweet. Round.
Celebratory and luxurious.

So this is what I infused in the figures, tones, and shapes.
It feels warm and sweet and happy.

I learned so much about mangoes doing this painting.
Eg.
🥭The paisley pattern on bandanas originates from mangoes.
🥭The leaves from a mango tree are believed to repel negative energy and attract prosperity and fertility in India where the mango is believed to originate.

ARTWORK
The starting point was the heads of the women, which followed an exact formation of mangoes hanging on a tree. Everything went from this point.

I used the colours of mangoes: orange, yellow, red, green, coral, purple. Tropical, sweet and glowy.

I used the curvy shapes of oval mangoes, long pointy leaves, and delicate long red stems laden with pale yellow tiny mango flowers.

Metallic colours of gold and copper added luxe and celebration.

This is the story of Mango Fandango.
(I used fandango in the sense of fun, party and dance).
